Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme Edition

no.......but its not like i have that kind of money to just spend on a processor.

But i'd say no still. Only benefit is unlocked multiplier and ability to overclock higher (supposedly)

I like the 980x it is fun to overclock.. I would only get one if you will use it for something other than gaming otherwise I would have stayed with the 920 DO I had before it held a stable overclock at 4.4ghz 24/7 for a long time before I upgraded to the 980x

The i7 is going to give you more performance in games atm. Six cores isn't going to benefit you until later.

I would go with the I7 but the AMD platform is not bad..

Well, really it depends on what you're doing. If all he's worried about is games, those extra cores on the AMD really won't do anything for him right now. If he actually has something that can utilize all six cores, they're much closer especially considering that the AMD is $100 cheaper.

not even close you can buy a amd 965be or a new amd 6 core for like a 1/4 of that and have the same speed go amd and have enough money left to get a good gpu

It's fact that the i7s are better than the AMD counterparts. AMD shouldn't have made the six cores imo. Instead, they should have refined what they have to make it actually better. More cores != better.

no doubt intels are better just not $750 better for the money amd is the way to go

That's just one or two CPUs that are specifically aimed at a very niche market. The rest of the i7 line is reasonably priced and far outperforms AMD in the same price range for just about everything you do.

yea.....only the 6 cores are that much more expensive.

Otherwise, the regular 4 core i7 lineup is much better at a reasonable cost

The 980X is worth $1k.

There is no other way to get the performance/benchmark domination that it brings.

Now, if you will actually utilize it, that is a different story. Most people however, will not

I'd go for the AMD personally, there's a large price difference between the two and the AMD is more powerful, games will eventually support the CPU so you won't have to worry about that.

The AMD is not more powerful. It's still the crappy Phenom II arch. That gets raped by Bloomfield. Added two more crappy cores doesn't make it better, especially if nothing will take advantage of it.

Games will eventually support it, yes. But by that time, 6/8/lots-o-cores processors will be cheap, and will be exponentially better. Future proofing in this hobby is nonexistent.
