I have an old old computer, its a Dell something. I have a really old GeForce 5500FX on it as my GPU. Its a PCI card, I was wondering if I bought lets say, a GeForce 8800 that is PCI and put it in there, would it work? BTW its a Pentium 4 on that mobo and it is DDR1 RAM

1. There are no PCI 8800s

2. if there were, they would be heavily bottlenecked by the bandwidth (or lack thereof) of PCI

3. Like real said, whatever PSU you have probably isn't going to cut it.

4. How much $$ do you have? It doesn't cost much to get a PC that would be 10x better than that
 
For $600, you could build a pretty nice system.

Are you having him salvage the CD/DVD drive?

I do agree with him though, build a new system if you have the cash to do so.
 
People use DVD drives? I go to the library or something, copy windows to a flash drive, and install it from that.

If you really need one (dvd drive), they are cheap, and if your system has one already, you can probably reuse it.

Judging from his old system, it's probably only a CD-RW. But DVD drives are only like 15-20 dollars.

Somewhat this.
I need to get a Windows .iso to mount to my flash drive. But I need to format my flashdrive before I do that. But I need to boot into Linux to do that, which I can't do atm because Linux is being a butt.

My flash drive got f'd after I used it as a ChromeOS recovery tool. It has at least 6 partitions, and none of them are recognized by Windows. I can't even format it through the console.

They are nice to have to people who aren't as tech savvy as others. They like to pop the disk in and go. Others are media enthusiasts who need a way of distributing their media in one way or another. I still use mine for that reason.
 
 
those older dells a lot of times had agp slots might check to see if it does if not and you dont have the money to build a new comp you could try this

it wont be as good as a pcie or even and agp card but it will be better than that 5500 i have put these in computers for ppl who wanted better video without buying a new comp they seem to work pretty good for what they are

i lol'd at the better PSU part

Better case is debatable. I hate the look of the 912, i like the painted inside of the nzxt better.

And I chose better ram for mine, but that wont really matter for this build i guess
