unable to remove read only attributes

ok on one of my hard drives and my external hard drive I have a my photos, music and local copy of my website, these are all for some unknown reason set to read only which is quite annoying it means when im off my pc I am unable to edit the files on my external drive, I have tried right clicking > propoties and removing the read only attribute but it just re checks it, can anyone suggest why?

I can only if I'm using my desk top, not from any other machine.
