Literature Discussion

Just finished Brave New World this evening. Read it all at school today. Although I felt the characters were rather "flat", the insight into a society so different was really good. I think the Savage was a great part of the book. I found the way society handled offspring and sexuality to be the most interesting parts.

Definitely made me change some views on the world.

Should I read Dies the Fire or All the King's Men?

Hmm...a Post-apocalyptic tale or a tale on how the political machine destroys idealism. Both sound joyfully soul crushing.

I'm leaning towards Dies the Fire at the moment. Idk which one to read, I'm so indecisive about what to read.

Im more of a sci-fi person and if you like sci-fi books like Heinlein you'll love
Old Man's War by John Scalzi

Another set of books are the Ender series by Orson Scott Card:
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
and Ender in Exile

From that series there is another series (you dont need to read the Ender series for this one at all, its from the P.O.V of one of Ender's generals in the first book and his story)
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
and Shadow of a Giant.

Good series:

Ender Series
Bartimaeus Trilogy
Wheel of Time
The Halo, Gears of War, and Mass Effect books
Eragon
Shannara
and Lord of the Rings, to name a few. All of these are excellent series, and I would highly recommend all but the video game off-books to everyone. The books off the video games are more preference, but the others should prove quite enjoyable and, in some cases, very thought provoking. (I'm looking at you Scott Card!)

of course how on middle earth couldve i forgotten tolkien.

Children of Hurin is a great read if you never read it

The Lord of The Rings + The Hobbit are easily my favorite books :)

Second place goes to the Inheritance cycle.... which the fourth book may come out at any time >.>

Ender series is good.
The Sword Of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind.
The Night Angel Series by Brent Weeks
The Wheel of Time Series
The Deathstalker Series by Simon Green
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King (Soon to be a series/movie)
The Belgariad Series by David Eddings
Oh, and most of the Dragonlance novels, but especially "The War of Souls" trilogy.

I agree I just finished the War of souls trilogy for the second time. The first time I read it I couldn't put it down & ended up reading all 3 books in 2 days. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Krynn after the events of the War of Souls. The Ogre Titans series was pretty good too,it's kind of dark though.

ya how long has it been?

like a year and a half? 2?

should be coming around soon enough

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up Brave New World, Dies the Fire, and Great Expectations. Can't wait. I'll probably re-read most of 1984 tonight.

I score higher on standardized tests for reading than most the seniors. I scored a 30 on my ACT for reading and I'm a freshman. I don't want to brag, I mean I feel bad when I say things like that.

Don't feel bad, I'm the same way with the reading and analysis part on the SAT...
As for books, I really enjoyed Brave New World but I also really enjoyed The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I think that's a book everyone should read because it really opened my eyes to Afghani culture and why Afghanistan is the way it is currently. The story is also REALLY well-written and addictive.
Oddly, I'm a huge book worm but I can't think of anything to really recommend? Lol.

I've been meaning to read Lolita, whatever top book list I see...Lolita seems to be near to top. Even though the subject matter is a little off.

I'm told Lolita is a love story about a pedophile. Sounds interesting imo but I don't know if I'll have time to read it.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series
The Hunger Games series
Wicked
The Lord of the Rings

My alltime favorite will always be Of Mice and Men.

And I get to tend the rabbits George? Yes Lenny...BANG! (that scene moved me)

Who zombie bumped this thread? Not complaining, can't believe I missed it last year.

Let's see, what haven't I read? Didn't have to do too much in High School, oddly enough. Had three Literature classes in college and I absolutely loved them, which is funny because I'm really not much of a reader.

Let's see off the top of my head from those classes:

The Frogs (very funny early play)
Brave New World (was going to recommend it if no one had)
1984 (oh big brother how you scare me so lol)
Tale of Two Cities (you like the last line, I love the first line)
Le'Morte De Arthur (loved this book, Sir Tristram was my favorite)
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Machiavelli's The Prince (If you love politics...oh man oh man oh man)
Tales of 1001 Nights (Is that the book's name?)
The Song of Roland (hilariously gruesome)
Beowulf
Dr. Faustus (enjoyed, very interesting)
Dante's Inferno (the whole trilogy actually)
The Screwtape Letters (Can I mention CS Lewis? Great author)

I know there are others but that's all that comes to mind.

Books I've read on my own time/for fun:

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Favorite by far)
Chronicles of Narnia (Great easy reads, love CS Lewis)
Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 (loved)
Clear and Present Danger
John Grisham's The Testament
Eragon, Eldest (only two I've read so far, it's medieval Star Wars but I like it)
The Didymus Contingecy (GREAT book, themed for Biblical times so probably not for everyone, best portrayal of Jesus I've ever read)
Sun Tzu's The Art of War (I think this is a must read)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head that are forum appropriate. Not that anything else I read is dirty, rather more "religious" (and I use that term very loosely) in nature.

One of my co-workers just lent me "Flight of the Falcon" which is set in the Mechwarrior universe, going to enjoy that!

Forgot to mention Starship Troopers! Great book, no movie has done it justice!

I love Heinlein's work. Starship Troopers was great, however my favourite book of his would have to be Stranger in a Strange Land.

Man, I need to read more Heinlein. So far all I've read of his was Job: A Comedy of Justice...which is totally worth reading if you haven't already.

I'm currently reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson and at the rate I'm going I might finish it by 2015.
