Its obvious that both cpus have 4 cores in them, but my biggest question is whats the biggest difference(s)? I know that the C2E is built specifically for gaming (you can also use the C2Q for gaming as well). Any real noticeable upgrades?

Is the extreme a quad?

Extreme's have unlocked multi's, and is the case of the X9770, the ability to run in a skulltrail board.

Sometimes (P4EE) they have more cache.

Well they have both dual & quad cores in the extreme, but i already have a c2d cpu. i was just wonderin which is better to get.

Extreme is a waste of money IMO for the average user/gamer like us unless you have a ton of money to throw around.

Its more geared towards the super high end and crazy overclockers

A regular quad would do you just fine

No Sandy Bridge sales pitch?

he has a 775 board that he probably wants to reuse

If i had a quarter for every time i wished i had that extra multi........

QFT, especially on the Core 2's. An unlocked multi is pure gold for overclocking and customizing. Most people just use the FSB, but if your motherboard ever hits a wall, that unlocked multiplier will get you past it.

well i already have a 775 board that im using, but im actually gonna get a newer 1. i think theres an issue w/ the pci-e slot thats causing my fans to make this whining sound. i should be gettin my replacement 9800gt in the mail later today, so ill test it out & figure out if its just the card or indeed the pci-e slot. besides, im still deciding between the c2q & c2e, so i havent exactly made up my mind. i should make my decision within a month.

As said before.. unless you just have money to waste. C2E is probably not the way to go.
Also... if you have to buy another board anyways... might want to start looking at Sandy Bridge CPU's and Mobos.

well i need a newer cpu that can use ddr2 memory. still wanna use it unless i can find some 2x2gb ddr3 memory for a really good price. if i really have 2, ill go for an i7 cpu. i really dont wanna upgrade that high tho.

If you are getting a new board, I really see no reason to stick with DDR2. I mean you'd be buying an outdated board. You don't need i7 to go DDR3, either. An SB i5 will be DDR3 and cost about the same as a new C2Q. Here's a list of all the DDR3 2x2GB that newegg has: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...66&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20.

Well ya, im more than likely gonna go w/ G.Skill since i have 4x1gb of their ddr2 memory. Been extremely pleased w/ it. Overall, i really appreciate all the feedback on this. However, im gonna have to wait til late February to early March to set aside enuff $$ 4 the cpu, memory & mobo. Also i plan on upgrading my sound card (its the oldest item i have).
