so last week i made topic for ipod on linux. I misunderstood my friend she wanted linux on his iPod, iphone and iPad. She's an apple freak i know oO. So i was wondering how to, advantages and stuff. Is this even possible? I think it is, but i'm not sure. What are te disadvantages ?, etc etc...

Everything u know, please post it. Thanks

I don't think it's possible. If you tried, Steve Jobs would fly through the interwebz, jump out of your iPad screen (it's gotta be good for something....) and then strangle you with your own moneys.

In all honesty, though, I have no idea.

There is probably a way, but its probably not very easy. There are distros of linux out there that are optimized for phones and tablets but i dont know how they will work with apple stuff.

To answer your questions.
-its probably possible (for an experienced programmer).
-its probably really tough to do and would void any warranties on the device
-Since the apple devices are optimized for the apple software, there probably no noticable advantages (cept maybe feeling like a beast for getting linux working on it in the first place).
-disadvantages (other than what is listed above) are probably fairly numerous

Lastly, if you reload with a linux OS, it will probably look and feel pretty close to the apple OS cause apple OS is just a fancy Unix distro.

i found something of 'jailbreaking'. Is this legal because i don't think so. Even so, are there advantages, does for example, the store still fix your iphone/ipod/ipad if u jailbreak it, ...

I don't know if its illeagal or not. Pretty sure it will void any warranty on the device though (the apple store pry wont fix it...)

Don't Jailbreak it because if u want to restore it again everything is gone.

There is a linux os devoted to the iPod classic, the iphone 2nd gen can run android 1.6, but that's outdated software now for most apps. Jailbreaking is NOT illegal as decided by the U.S. federal government, but apple is still against it. If you add me to steam, I can point you in the right direction for the ipod classic. Flashing any product with a cracked OS voids all warranty rights, neither I or eGO will be held responsible for any assistance I may give.

Android is based on linux

You can put android on your iPod/iPhone

Jailbreaking is legal. It allows you to put 3rd party things onto your iphone etc...and you don't have to use the appstore to get your apps.

Yes you can get android 1.6 on the Iphone 3G or Original But you can't get it on the newer ones like the 3GS or 4 which is lame because the old ones are slow as heck. You can't do it on the ipad either and idk about the touch but im pretty sure you can't.

Idt they have straight linux for the iphone.

If anything, none of these OS are being ported to the newer iPhones and are only working for the original or 3G.

Android OS is the way to go :thumbup1: Samsung Galaxy S ftw
