The Damned Values of Items in TF2

Just play to have fun. Don't worry about the values because you can find almost any item in the first place its just a matter of luck so if you get it, awesome. If you don't, meh

I try to warn people about that, crafting values are always much higher than trading values. Just wait to find one or offer to trade for one. If you get desperate just offer 3 weapons for it, people will do it and you'll save some hard earned metal.

thats how it works. i recommend getting used to it fast otherwise you might have a bad time when it comes to trading.
also why would you craft something and trade it away? all im crafting is what i rly want to keep. and even then i try to trade cause its prolly cheaper.

If I was you, instead of crafting them just go to trade servers and get the hats you want for 1 refined, that way you are the one that gets the better deal out of it ;).

The Crafting Values Are Decided By Valve.

The Trading Values Are Decided By Everyone Who Owns And Plays Tf2. Not Valve.

Honestly there is no reason to craft anything but weapons into metal.

This!

Also, +1 to what has already been said. Instead of accepting values thrown at you by Valve, make your own value. Like Frisky said, hop on Trade servers more. I did this the other day for the first time, and within minutes had received refined metal for a hat and was able to purchase paint, all in a matter of minutes. Servers like that are also pretty good indication of what the "market prices" for things are.

If the Mann Co taught us anything it's the power of economics in a video game. Get smart, or get ripped off. :P

dude i hop on trade servers all the time. btw i do throw my own values at them but no one gives a damn. they just want the fixed value system that the community made for no reason

well just as an example you wanted 2 refined and maybe reclaimed for your nappers. on trading servers you could get the nappers for 1 refined. thats why ppl dont accept your offer ;P trading has become a part of this game so more and more ppl know the values and know whats overpriced.

honestly i am surprised at what people get rid of for a trinket or hat. Personally i for some reason really like the Vintage stuff. I have traded a couple of drops that someone really wants for the Vintage that they initially didnt want to offer for fear i would turn them down.

Its all about what its worth to you. If you are really after something then be willing to pay for it. If you are not willing to do that then you dont really want it that bad do you? I have crafted a few items and traded them for, yup, vintage items. Sure I spent alot to craft it. But i really like vintage. so its worth it for me.

On a final note, once you get something, it doesnt run out. You have it. Don't have to look for it again! So don't stress too much on how the trade is going. You are not going to be able to get everything you want as soon as you want it sometimes. Just know that somewhere down the road you will get it at the cost you are willing to pay. It's something to look forward to. Like a goal!

im just trying to prove a point here. yes the demand for hats and the rarity of items are how to community decides on creating values for items, but its screwed that the community is doing wat valve probably didn't expect

Why wouldn't they expect this? If everyone blindly followed crafting values what would be the point of having trading at all?

Also, don't forget that there is an edit button if you feel the need to add another thought when you are the last post, much as I am doing now.

Free Market:
The theory holds that within an ideal free market, property rights are voluntarily exchanged at a price arranged solely by the mutual consent of sellers and buyers. By definition, buyers and sellers do not coerce each other, in the sense that they obtain each other's property rights without the use of physical force, threat of physical force, or fraud, nor are they coerced by a third party (such as by government via transfer payments)[1] and they engage in trade simply because they both consent and believe that what they are getting is worth more than or as much as what they give up. Price is the result of buying and selling decisions en masse as described by the theory of supply and demand.

Everyone makes their own price for stuff, yesterday I added onto the price of paint, I sent an all chat message 1 reclaimed for 1 paint or 9 random weapons for 1 paint. Not bad imo, since 6 weapons gets you a refined I get 3 more free and best part is not everyone has a reclaimed and i got 18 weapons for 2 paints which got me nearly 3 reclaimed instead of 2 :P.

I tried trading a scrap for any three weapons but no one would.
