Valve has made their biggest mistake since the set hats.

Valve has just announced another promotional tie-in, this time with $50 MMO Rift called the Sun-On-A-Stick for Scout and Sharpened Volcano Fragment. Now if you're like me you're likely thinking "Oh, more weapons that don't fit the art style? Oh well, at least they're reskins". Unfortunetely this is where new precedent has been set. Observe:

Unique Stats!

Now I'm sure you're thinking "Surely, Valve wouldn't give people who pre-order unique weapons." And you're right.

The Sharpened Volcano Fragment and the Sun-on-a-Stick will be obtainable through crafting after the Rift pre-order period ends.

But for the next three weeks people will be running around with weapons others won't have.

so what? Maybe you can trade for them if you want or just wait it out. I don't see the big deal.

It's not that big of a deal since they will be craftable. These weapons look terrible. For the axe, it lights the person on fire, inst that what the flamethrower is for? For the mace, the person has to be on fire for it to do anything. Most likely the pyro would die since the pyro is terrible, or the pyro would live and would kill the person anyways, or the flaregun is used, and in that rare case it works well. So basically don't get fussed about something that isn't too good at all.

Maybe, I'm being dramatic (it's rather common actually) I just feel Valve is just doing more and more things that make no sense. Plus who knows how excessive the the crafting requirements will be.

It's more what it represents than what it is. I think I'm over reacting a tad because I continue to choose to start up MNC rather than TF2 and it just makes me a little sad since TF2 has been my go to game for years.

Sounds like they're just trying to boost sales of something on Steam. Makes perfect sense to me.

I don't see any issue with other people walking around with these weapons before us, they don't seem to be game-changing at all.

i think u are over reactive a bit too...pre order inceptives have been around for ever...whoopty doo people are gonna have weapons (that dont even look good) 3 weeks before they are avable to anyone else...had it not been valve these items would never be available to anyone ever unless u bought rift, plus what about sam and max those are only obtainble via pre order (or tradenow) stuf like that...yes they have uniqe stats...but woopty doo who cares when there not even good

Also just so everyone knows, items gotten from the preorder are "Genuine" much like vintage items, though unlike vintage they revert to normal after a trade.

lol i dont see what that matters...is there REALLY any value to a vintage item? as long as it works and does what it suppose to there is no diffrence betwene vintage and non vintage items...

You're not overreacting, it's just that most people here and on the Steam forums can't see any wrong with these kind of things anymore.

Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled.

I'm getting a feeling some people will be trading their max's heads for these weapons during the period they're not craftable.

What the hell are you talking about? :P The axe looks awesome! Sure, it might look one of the most non-TF2ish weapons, but it still looks great.

Functionality wise, these weps are a real treat to those people who like to melee to begin with. I know I'm going to love jumping on people with the axe and catching them on fire with it. The scout's bat doesn't seem all that great, but honestly, his bat never has done awesome amount of damage, unless you get 2 crits in a row.

meh. i wouldnt worry too much about it since we will be able to craft it.
and everyone whos using it earlier and trying to attack will die anyways sooo.. ;)

I don't think it matters. A hat is a hat whether it's vintage or not, it's not like they're any different. Heck I traded away my soldier medal (#814) for three hats:blushing:, only because the guy offered them to me, otherwise I would have let it go for one hat. It's only pixels in a video game as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not that worried about it, since I do not play either of those classes. I will still be lobbing grenades in peoples faces and chopping whats left off with my axe. :) <3

Personally, I think the more weapons and hats and etc. just add to making the game slower and more glitchy in the long run, from experiences in certain servers.
