So I tried the eGO Hardcore servers after weeks of avoiding HC since launch...
...and I had a freakin' blast! Just the other day I was on CS: Source talking to Slazenger about how I was a huge BC2 fan, but avoided Hardcore servers like the plague. Well, yesterday, late in the evening, I decided to give the eGO HC servers a try. On a relevant note, they were one of the first servers I tried after getting the game, but I got discouraged because I had no good equipment, I was still TERRIBLY new to the game, and I had no idea what I was doing. Anyways!
Interestingly enough, now that I was a practiced snipe-recon with his lovely little VSS at Rank 14 (19k points in) and about 2k points from unlocking DAT M95 (insert choir of angels), I actually performed fairly well on my first map. I'm still trying to get the names of all the maps down but it was the HC-Mixed Modes server and it was that grassy knoll map with all the hills and tanks and choppers and you bomb the carps out of the place, yeah?
So I take my VSS out to the second-to-last defense point. I don't know where the enemy infantry is coming from; I have NO idea how many tanks they have, or why grenades seem to keep landing at my feet, but I'll be darned if I'm not having a blast! Turns out that Hardcore isn't actually that hard if you play it smart. I racked up a cool (for me) and even 1:1 ratio and walked away with nearly 3000 Recon points in one map, proceeding to unlock my M95 AND Rank 15! I load up my .50cal with Magnum ammo for the next map and continue on to have fun one-shotting and no-scoping people's faces off. :>
The sad part is, we still lost. The good news? It was the most fun I've had to date on BC2 -- to the point that I can't believe I've been missing this all along! Admittedly, things like friendly fire, no-radar and whatnot were intimidating at first, but now that I've gotten over my "fear of fail", so to speak, I'm REALLY having a blast and I'm not sure that I can go back to non-Hardcore servers after this (sorry, eGO 24/7 Heavy Metal... I have a new love).
I know this probably seems like a random rave, and that's pretty much all it is, but yeah: eGO's HC servers have a new kid in town. His name is Runo. And he's about. To get. Owned. Hardcore.
tl;dr: If you haven't played on eGO's Hardcore servers yet, give it a real long go!
(On a side-note -- if I can say this without seeming like a brown noser -- props to Leftenent and the other present admins whose names I did not catch for handling the rulebreakers in the way they did last night. They were really ruining the atmosphere but were dealt with quite nicely! :>)
