New MacBook Pro

Hey all,

So i finally broke down and decided i wanted a good laptop to keep me connected while out on the go. I've always wanted a Mac since I first used the old Macintosh LCII in elementary school (16MHz processor, 50MB hard drive, 4MB RAM haha), so I went out and picked up one of the brand spankin new MacBook Pro's that were just released (on my birthday :) ).

I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far, the new Sandy Bridge dual core i5 processor seems really fast (I got the 13" model). I'm downloading CS:S now and anticipate that it should run decently from what i've read so far. I'm kinda bummed that they only included the new Intel HD graphics in the 13" model but I couldn't justify spending another $600 for slightly less mediocre graphics. I didnt really buy it to play games on, but it's a nice bonus.

If you're on the fence on picking up a MacBook of your own, I'd highly recommend it. I'll post some info on how CS:S and WoW end up running once I finish downloading them.

I looked them yesterday, but they're too expensive for just wanting to check it out. :/
 
I mostly get macbooks just cuz they look so much nicer and the build quality is better than most of the Windows laptops coming from HP, Dell and stuff. Also battery life is amazing

Theyre just so plain and bleh

I like alienware though, they look cool at least haha

Im gonna get a laptop for college soon and will probably be debating between the 13 inch macbook air or the 13 inch macbook pro

The MacBook Pro beats out the MacBook Air in best bang for your buck ($200 more). The Pro has a much faster processor, twice as much RAM standard, 2 hours more battery life, larger hard drive and included DVD-ROM SuperDrive. The only thing the MacBook Air wins at is display resolution. But for school, that really wouldn't matter.

ummmm the macbook air might have a smaller hard drive. But its a SSD which is 10 times better than a 5400 RPM hard drive.

The macbook air also wins in the GPU department......the Nvidia discrete GPU is still better than the Intel HD 3000 series

Plus its super thin and light
 
I'd be curious to see if they can use that thunderbolt connector for external gpus -- I know it's only pcie 4x, but it certainly has potential. The air w/ a sandy bridge cpu is bound to come out around June.

Apple laptops are really high quality. I agree with you on not being able to justify the discreet gpu at that price. You would be better off going with the lower end laptop and building a cheap desktop for games. Gaming on a laptop is never a great experience.

And congrats on your purchase! You'll be happy! If you need any help let me know. I know Macs in and out. On an unrelated note now I need to get a new one because I'm out of date :(. I'll wait to my annual august refresh :).

Reflex, while I will agree with ya that the benchmarks do say that the new Intel HD 3000 outperforms the nVidia 320M, Intel has been historically bad with driver support. For example, there seems to be an issue with Civ5 where the game runs fine, but no text appears on menus or in game. Hopefully they'll get it straightened out before too long.

IceStyle, my new MacBook runs CS:S like a champ, and WoW too, easily playable on an hour lunch at work :)

PewPewBangBang, While the SSD may be insanely fast, I dont know how I would survive with only 64GB of hard drive space on any computer, or even 128GB. For the price, the technology just isn't worth it at the moment IMO. I am sad that the hybrid drive rumor didnt pan out for this version of the MBPs. The rumor mill anticipated the standard 500GB hard drive but also included would have been a small 8GB SSD that would have held only the OS and backups.

I generally do not like Macs because of their hardware limits with programs that I use on a daily basis. But onto a bigger enemy, LAPTOPS! I prefer a Desktop any day for gaming and all aroung usage. (Do not hate me D:)

I want a Mac because I want to see what the OS is like, but I can't justify $1,100 for a pet project.
 
I doubt ill be gaming much in college anyway. Probably more console gaming than PC gaming by then.

Guess ill wait and see till that time comes to get a laptop.

As for now.......gonna pick up a canon T2i with kit lenses for $511 tomorrow =D!!!

Where are you getting a boss deal like that? I'd love to get a T2i for $500 with a lens kit.
