I may get a dirt bike this summer for my camp in Mississippi and for riding in the spillway. I'm used to quad riding but I wanted to know a little more about them. Few questions:

Can I go through mud like I can on a quad?
What size would be best? I'm about 5'5 and 140 lbs.
Will it ride over terrain that has a lot of fallen tress and limbs?

Any DMR.
I'm a BMXer and dirt jumper, a bit different to mountain biking. Dobbeh is a mountain biker, send him a message.

Used to ride motox for a few years up in NY and NC but sold the bikes about a year ago due to a wreck lol. First of all are you familiar with working the clutch? If so then id say your best bet is to find a 2 stroke 125cc. They started using 4 strokes now and 2 strokes are harder to find, but a 2 stroke has more power at higher rpm's and higher gears so its a good starting point.

But as far as your questions.

Mud will be a little bit of a challenge to new riders but im sure you'll get the hang of it.

As far as size, all the bikes are relatively the same height under 450cc's. Id go with a 125cc, its not that hard to handle.

And for fallen trees...I had a skid plate but its pretty hard to take trees or logs at any speed.

Hope this helps somewhat, add/pm/come into FPSX rooms in vent and grab me if u have any more questions.

I have enough knowledge of a clutch to drive my neighbor's quad down the road, but not much practical experience.

What is a good price for a used 125cc? Are there any signs of where I should lok out for when buying?

Umm it all depends on which make you go (yamaha, honda, suzuki, kawasaki, KTM) im gonna ball park it somewhere around a grand-ish all depends on condition. Only thing you wanna make sure if is if it starts, it hasnt been mistreated, make sure the engine looks decently clean. And what usually goes quick on bikes thats been raced are the front fork seals and springs. If you get on the bike, hold the front brake and push down the springs in the front as far as you can go, if you're able to compress them almost fully, ur springs are shot. Everything else is an easy fix usually.

Ooooh! Dirt motorbike!
I thought you meant these:

I use to race motocross for 4-5 years here in florida but like dj said a 125 wouldnt be bad at all for starting off, that was my first bike. You said youre 5'5 and i know for a fact you'll have a bit of trouble getting on the bike and sitting on it at a stop. It doesnt matter what kind of bike you have that'll make it through mud, they all will, it all comes down to the skills of the rider. I could make it through mud on a 85. Dirtbikes are a little different than riding quads around. You should try to somehow find someone who has a 125 and ride it around a bit and see if you like it, if its too big you can go with a big wheel 85, its like an 85 but it has a bigger wheels. If a 125 is too much power for you which it might be, then go with some kind of trail bike that will be a 4 stroke. If you just want something to ride around the land id go with a bigger trail bike so it has the power but its not too fast. Any 125 2 stroke is a race bike and theyre kinda jumpy to new riders sometimes. Goodluck!
