I got a new Radeon 5770 1Gb for Christmas and I've been gaming it up as of late, having reinstalled CS:S and recently installed Final Fantasy XIV.

I'm having issues though. I reinstalled Half Life 2 and I also play Borderlands, but when I play these two games (specifically), I get really bleary headed and feel woozy, like I'm getting dizzy and motion sickness, and I'm pretty sure it's because the game is screwing with my head, due to the refresh rates.

Does anyone know a cure for this, or how to change those settings for those specific games so that I don't have this problem? CS:S doesn't bother me one bit, nor does FF XIV. And All those settings are Maxed

Could it be something as simple as my Sensitivity being too high on my mouse?

You could try increasing the FOV. You'd have to ask someone else how to do it in Source because I haven't done that in forever. I think it's just FOV_<input>. As for FFXIV, I have no idea.

What kind of monitor are you using?

It really depends on many factors. The first and foremost question i would have is what medication are you taking?

There are many medications out there that can cause these symptoms and/or symptoms related to issues such as these.

Secondly, I would def try changing the FOV. It's known to help in some instances.

And finally, the third and most obvious solution to all this is, when you feel the symptoms starting to arise, just stop playing, take a break, and go rest.

. . .

Or, maybe something with the refresh rate in the game messes with my eyes, since I don't take any medications... and never have?

Thanks for trying.

Refresh rate is on the monitor side. If it wasn't affecting you earlier, it wouldn't be affecting you now.

What kind of frame rate are you getting? It could be possible that screen tearing could cause the motion sickness. Try turning on V-Sync and see if it helps.

It's also possible that it is the refresh rate. If either his GPU or monitor drivers are allowing software to override his settings, then that could be a problem. For instance, I just found out Far Cry 2 has default refresh rate of 59. If his game is forcing a refresh rate that his monitor doesn't like, that could be a problem.

Or you could stop playing the video games that are affecting your health and go see a doctor and not take health advise from a gaming forum, you know what people do when they have a health problem?

On another note, I seriously doubt that the refresh rate of your monitor is causing motion sickness. This would only happen if you could visually see the screen shaking or flickering, which you didn't describe. Also I assume you use an LCD in which case it doesn't flicker because it has a back light, as opposed to older CRTs that did not and could flicker. (Look at an old CRT in a video or through a video camera, you will see it flickering, look at an LCD you wont.). It probably has to do with the actual game itself and you being susceptible to something in the game , like the movement of the game, or the quick shuttering of colors. This would be an actual medical condition, that may or may not be treatable. I am a certified EMT (EMT-I), but I am not a doctor, so don't take my last two sentences as medical facts, just theories. Either way go to the doctor.

That's called screen roll. It's due to mismatched refresh rates of the display vs camera. Most cameras either record at 24 fps or 30 fps, neither of which are divisible by a generic CRT's refresh rate. It also has to do with how CRTs display images, but mostly due to the refresh rate. Please don't spread misinformation, I was in Advanced Video Production for two years, and I've done semi-professional level work.

well in most cases, its due to medication. cymbalta and medications like those have the most drastic effects.

nevertheless, the easiest solution is to not game as much. Once you feel the onset of the symptoms, just simply, STOP.

alright boys and girls,

its time to stop.

the question asked by the OP is about feeling dizzy while gaming. As stated above by MYSELF, this could be caused by many factors including medications, current health state, and other confounding variables.

For the original poster, here is my advice to you. Either STOP playing when you get these symptoms or go seek the advice of your family physician.

Thanks guys.
