Japan earthquake causes tsunami

This is insane. Good luck to them all. It is so strange in this happening around the world where hundreds are dying and you are sat there nice and calm with no worries...
 
Now a 6.6 quake has just hit in Nagano's area. They're speculating b/c of the location that it could be a separate quake and possibly not an aftershock.

No new tsunami alerts as of yet. The 8.9 + the aftershocks and tsunami was bad enough hitting up in Sendai, Ibaraki, etc., but this one's a little closer to my hometown. This sucks. :[

I am most worried about the Fukushima nuclearpowerplant that is (what i heard i the news) overupheating, and they can't cool it down.
That is some serious business!
Also according to BBC news it is being told that there is 300 confirmed deaths, but it is expected to be at least 1.000 deaths according to Kyodo.

"The official Kyodo news agency is reporting that about 88,000 people are missing."

Key points

A powerful tsunami has swept across a large area of northern Japan causing major damage, flooding towns and sweeping away buildings. It was triggered by a 8.9-magnitude earthquake

Police say up to 300 bodies have been found in Sendai, the city that was worst-hit. Many more people are missing

Tsunami warnings were issued for virtually the entire Pacific region. The first waves have now reached the mainland of the United States along the Oregon coast. UPDATE, it has just been confirmed that the wave have hit Mexico -Though no damage taken.


Earlier, tsunami waves about 1m (3 feet) high flooded several beaches on Hawaii
Relatively minor waves also reached the Philippines, the Kuril Islands and Taiwan.





UPDATE TO THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT:
"Radiation levels at the damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant are continuing to rise. The Jiji Press news agency says the levels are eight times above normal. Its report also cites a ministry official as saying there is a "possibility of a radioactive leak"." Japans Kyodo says that the radiation levels are 1000 times above normal

US military planes flew coolant to the nuclear plant..

Hopefully they can get it under control..

They said this quake is 8,000 times more powerful than the one in New Zealand.. that's just mind boggling.
 
The quake-damaged Fukushima nuke facility will vent its air containment vessels, as pressure levels have risen dangerously. The air may contain dangerous radiation, though an official evacuation notice for nearby residents has already been declared by officials.

Best luck to the Niigata, Nagano, Sendai, and surrounding areas. Also heard that one place had 1/3 of it's area submerged from the tsunami. *Edit* A third of Kesennuma in Miyagi is underwater.

Also I'm safely in Vegas. I'm only from Tokyo Prefecture so it just saddens me to see all this; just feels like it hits home a bit.

I hope the US military is able to really do some good there w/ all of our resources.

It's okay, the Japanese people can come live with me... Well it pretty small but we'll see i still have my place here in japan :)
 
This situation with the power plant went from bad to worse... If this thing has a meltdown, it'll be Chernobyl all over again.

It won't be any were near as bad as Chernobyl. At most it would be a 3 Mile situation. But even that was really do faulty construction.
 
Another chernobyl would just be devastating, I couldnt imagine....a 8.9 earthquake....then a tsunami, then the radiation of a nuclear power plant causing another chernobyl....jeez that would be wow
 
As long as sea water keeps pumping through the reactor, it can be avoided. Lets just PRAY that the pumps don't give up.
 
when things like this happening, im glad that the world can respond like this. shows that there is still good people out there.

I just want to post in here stating something.

I'm sure a lot of people have heard rumors that both Satoshi Tajiri (Creator of Pokemon) and Yuko Yamaguchi (Creator of Hello Kitty) have both died. Let me just explain: THESE RUMORS ARE FALSE!!! Please spread the word and tell everyone that these two individuals are still alive.


Aside from that, my heart goes out to Japan as well.
 
Reuters: The emergency cooling system is no longer functioning at the Fukushima No. 3 reactor, an official from Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has told journalists.
