Japan earthquake causes tsunami

The meltdown that may be in progress cannot be confirmed at this time as there are conflicting reports...

CNN just reported there have been 250 total aftershocks all measuring above 5.0 with 50 of those above 6.0

0421: If you've just joined us, here are a few pointers about the nuclear crisis now unfolding as a result of Friday's earthquake. The problem centres on one of two nuclear power plants in Fukushima prefecture, which stand 11.5km (7.1 miles) apart. The plant, Fukushima 1, has six reactors. On Saturday afternoon local time, a hydrogen explosion reportedly hit the building housing the No 1 reactor but the container of the reactor remained intact. Early today local time, it was reported that the emergency cooling system of Reactor 3 had failed. The reactor's fuel rods were reportedly exposed and a partial meltdown was believed to be under way.

0411: Shaun Bernie, from lobby group Greenpeace, tells the BBC that using plutonium as fuel increases the risk that something could go wrong because plutonium-fuelled plants operate at a higher level. He also says plutonium is far more dangerous if it's released into the environment.

0406: More on the specific dangers of Fukushima 1 plant's reactor 3: The BBC's Chris Hogg in Toky says the reactor is fuelled with uranium and plutonium, meaning the consequences of a meltdown are much more severe than at the other reactors.

0352: The news coming from Japan remains bleak. Government spokesman Yukio Edano: "We do believe that there is a possibility that meltdown has occurred - it is inside the reactor, we can't see. However, we are acting, assuming that a meltdown has occurred and with reactor number 3 we are also assuming the possibility of a meltdown as we carry out measures."
 
I still stand by nuclear power. Just sayin'.

I have faith that Japan will recover rather quickly. Although the meltdown is not good at all.
 
Don't have a link to it, but seen a newscast with Michio Kaku in which he stated this was actually an aftershock of a smaller earthquake that made the tectonic plate Japan sits on go over the top of another plate. Also it was stated that this earthquake tilted the earths axis more.
 
I have some updates for you.

We appreciate that all people in Japan act calm and act smart, our thanks for that.
We have been working hard to rescue as much people as possible; Police, firefighters, foreign aid, coast guard, JSDF. We managed to rescue 12,000 people. Currently helping; 50,000 JSDF troops. Police; over 20,000, over 11,000 firetrucks arrived. 20,000 doctors and medical staff has arrived to provide aid.
We declare this as a national disaster.

The nuclear situation is still on high alert, but TEPCO has a report on the plant.

We have a thing that we want to ask of the people of Japan. Apart from the Fukushima powerplant other plants have been damaged, we want to ask you to preserve energy. So that we can save and store enough electricity.

A nationwide blackout is a problem we are now facing, we must avoid. We asked TEPCO to shedule rolling blackout, within the TEPCO service area.
We appologise for the invovinience for the people of Japan, but we want to minimize the damage to public utilities, like hospitals."

We will provide as much information as possible. Please try to understand our reaons and neccecarily doing that. After seeing this disaster, in combination with the nuclear threath. This is the first emergency since WWII, according to me.

Can we overcome this tragedy? That is up to the people of Japan.

We Japanese have survived many tragedies and we have build this peaceful society after this disaster, I believe all the Japanese people can stay together to overcome the situation.

Please, any of you determing stay put with your friends, family and neighbours and we will rebuild Japan peacefully and better. We urge to ask that the people of Japan

Fukushima No1. Nuclear Plant

First reactor: Apperantly stable

Number 3: Pressure rising, damage unkown.

Reactor 4, 5 and 6. Were shut down, but closely monitored.

Fukushima Plant No2.

Is down, sea water coolant not functioning yet.

There was a "Meltdown" but it was a partial meltdown of a fuel rod and has been contained.

A friend and coworker of my dad's is on vacation in Hawaii the day this happened. When she woke that morning after my dad called to warn her she found that her hotel's staff had slipped a note under the door, it read as such:

"A ___________ is heading for Hawaii, please refer to the information pamphlet in your nightstand for more information"

Isn't standardization wonderful?

Hope everything works out for the affected areas though.

So its good that this wasn't a Chernobyl and it didn't last for a week.
 
I saw the Tsunami carry Houses. It was incredible, It was like a city on the edge of it and some houses were on fire.

It can't become a Chernobyl, this is a light water plant, the media should stop overreacting.

In other news according to Asahi (Japan) A possible meltdown was reported in core no3. of the number 1 Fukushima plant.
 
Chernobyl was also not protected by a 6 inch steel casing.

A lot of years have gone by since Chernobyl.. have faith in the advancements since then.

Which have been errupting for 50 to 200 years now...
 
I don't watch the news. Biased and wrong. The only good ones are local stations.
 
Theres a lot more media coverage on, well, everything. It leads people to think that 2012 is coming. Sure, we've never had an 8.9 in Japan nor a mega-tsunami, but large earthquakes happen every year in varying locations and they have happened every year.

It is just chance that they happen when they do. If you think even for a minute, you'll realize that these events have no correlation with "2012".
