I Need Computer Help

Hello fellow Tech Help people. I need help making my computer go faster and since my brother won't help me in this area i want to ask you. I am not a computer person but i need information on how to make my computer run DoD better.

Currently i can only play those small orange maps, which is very rare. I think the problem with my computer is the frames per second MAYBE.

This is my computer information:
-eMachine desktop model T5062
-hard drive 160 GB SATA II
-7200 RPM with 8 MB Cache
-1024 MB DDR2 (dual channel)
-AMD athlon 64 processor 3800+
-2.4 GHz | 512 KB L2 Cahce | 2000 Mhz system Bus
-Nvidia Geforce 6150SE

NOTICE: I have no idea what the above means, so if you could recommend cheap (all together i cannot let my budget exceed over $100) hardware that will help my computer run faster please show me the links or recommend them. THANK YOU!!!
 
yeah a better vid card would help a lot
look around theyre from $50 - 400 depending on card

also is it PCIe or AGP, that also affects price and performance
 
yes, it is only your video card that is holding you back. But it is important to know if it is a PCIx or AGP slot that you will be purchasing a new card for.

READ this post to see which type you have. Aslo when you have your case open to check your slot you also need to tell use how many watt's your power supply is. When you opent he case and are starring at the circuitry, it will be the top left (probably) metal box where your black power cord plugs into. There will be a sticker telling you all about it and you need to look for output in watts, such as 350 watts or 500 watts.

Once we have both of those pieces of informaitn we can help you spend $100 and play dods like a champ.

Thanks for the quick input. My borther and i have already thought of swapping some video cards, or i might just buy my own. What my brother said though was that it might be that i need more after i get a video card to "hold it up" i guess. Do you guys think i need this? (That probably made no sense :P)

To greenmonkey, i will try to get the watt information by tomorrow.
 
Watt informaiton AND slot type. The thread i posted to has pictures.

Ok my watt type is 300 as and my slot...umm i forgot, but my brother is going to hook me up with his old video card. Greenmonkey the part where i said "hold it up" meant i did not have enough wires and not enough power. Therefore my brother will help me after he watches his Lost with his g/f. Thanks for the help GreenMonkey. I can't wait to get into those servers!!
 
I also cant wait to bump into you, but hopefully not literally, i hate blockers.

300 watts is unfortubately not enough to use with most of the cards you would want, i'm actually surprised that only came with 300 (although it fits well with your hardware 350 was standard since 2001 roughly). Unless you see what the slot is you may find out that his card wont even work with your computer. Just to keep that in mind.

I'm sorry to bump this old post up, but i am having troubles with my computer again. My fps has gone to the 20's and i don't know what to do. My brother told me not to overclock it. He also said that it might be because of vista and they are trying to fix the problem right now. Do you think i should wait or do you guys have another solution?
 
You have vista? Terrible idea. VERY terrible.

Vista hogs....everything. I see that you have 1 GB of RAM. That is not quite enough for Vista. I would recommend perhaps another gigabyte.

Also, you mentioned somewhere up there that you have a new video card. What is it?

Also #2: Tips for increased perf. on EVIL Vista.

- Go to control panel-->performance information and tools-->adjust visual effects. Choose the option for best performance. This rids your computer of the pretty stuff and makes it look a bit like xp. It also improves performance.

- Get a more powerful video card. Aero is a resource hog just like the rest of Vista. This is a fairly common bottleneck.

- Get more RAM. Vista is...well you know by now what I'll say.

- Turn off Aero. No more pretty looking transparent thingy that hogs resources but does nothing useful at all in any way whatsoever. YAY.

Try these if you want and post your results.

You could also always lower your settings for DOD:S

My horrible eMachine came with vista, which is really stupid. My settings for DoD:S is very low right now and i couldn't find the tip on the control panel, there was no performance info and tools on the control panel. And how do you turn off aero on vista?
 
Disabling Aero:
Kay I haven't done this on Vista in weeks and don't have access to one right now so I might skip a detail or two but:

-Right click on your desktop.
-Select Personalize.
-Select Window Color and Appearance.
-You should see something referring to "classic appearance properties" or close to that. click on it.
-Choose a non-aero theme.
 
I d/led an upgrade for nvidia for my video card and the fps is still the same. If i do have a hardware malfunction what should i do?
 
How many frames per second were you getting before you started getting 20fps?

Also, what's the temperature on the video card while you're gaming? Are you seeing any artifacts (i.e. do the walls look like tetris?) in game maybe?

And lastly, what video card is it? I don't think I saw the name in this thread.

Check for spyware next. Download Spybot: Search and Destroy. Have it check for updates and run a scan.

On another note: doobs, it's a 7900gs @500mhz/256mb vram
 
spybot won't slow my computer right? i really can't put crap in my computer right now. At doobs it been running 20 fps since Jan. The highest it got before that was 60-80 fps.
 
Spybot uses a very tiny amount of system resources, you probably will not even notice it's there at all.

Edit: Did you change anything at all in Jan? Or did this just happen out of nowhere.
