CCNA itself is based off R&S so yes R&S and currently I am working on Routing for CCNP on the way to the CCSP.

And as for your quesiton about have I worked with Cisco equipment; yes that is my job as a Network Engineer for the company that holds place #32 out of the fortune 500.

for the average PC user (not novice) to use if they suspect
network problems are from the computer itself?

If not, do you have recommendations of anything that is?
Or do you have a reason to not use a program?


I've used it before, by helping fix network issues, it turned out
my friends computer had an MTU setting of 0. After that fix his
network was never faster/stabler before (as he explained it).

To be perfectly honest, I do not like using programs to troubleshoot/optimize/etc...Everyone has there own preferences and needs...best way to setup/config/troubleshoot is the good old fashioned way.

I'm a Cisco nerd with a CCENT and soon taking ICND2 for my CCNA. I started, however, from the hardware side and have tons of Cisco equipment running. Some of it I'm more familiar with than others. I was just hoping that I can bounce a few things off of you if I get stumped and can't find a solution to a problem. Something to be said for knowing your equipment before jumping head-first into it.

Just an idea....my network edge is an 1841 ISR with a 3550-48 for distribution. (I cheaped out on getting a 6500 series. No real need for any of it.)

Just let me know if you're willing to help a fellow IE-in-training, and I'll send my reasonable and well-researched questions your way.

Another question (forgot to include this in the first one).

What are your thoughts/opinions on dedicated network cards (NIC's)
(such as the VisionTek Bigfoot Killer 2100 Gaming Network Card)?

Does that NIC in particular do what they say it does by bypassing
the CPU and processing all the network data in the NIC itself? If so,
is it worth it? Benefits or risks?

Does a stock NIC or one that's built-in the motherboard work as well
as any other card?

Anyone know a android application I can use to view file structures on my network? Like go into my server or a NAS (Network Attached Storage) over Wifi and download files, copy, cut, move files etc.

Sounds like you have good gear there. You don't need the heavy hitter 6400 series gear-too expensive for CCNA-CCNP

95% of places that I have worked have some EXPENSIVE gear and then link the satellite locations with the cheaper gear (*ie $700.00 / piece *)

Umm, I wanted to know how to do a simple ventrilo server but i really have no idea what i need and for it to work.

Unfortunately, you are looking to do something that is a bit more difficult than you think. First off, Ventrillo server = VoIP...VoIP is high overhead and bandwidth...cannot be done with commercial wireless routers..if you could connect up you would be able to get 1 or 2 people talking poorly. You need a faster connection medium than DSL and you would want a 2821 Cisco router with MPLS enabled. MPLS is a packet that contains both Data and Voice...(*simplified*)

I work for walgreen's as a network engineer we use Qwest, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Paetec....of I believe all of them offer MPLS services; if that is what you are asking Angellas.

I have Comcast business over DOCSIS III cable. Most likely not supported/offered?

Although, with my bandwidth....

Other thoughts....Ventrilo licensing only allows you to have an 8-slot server and on only one port (you can't change this port). If I remember correctly, Vent uses a compressed codec. Maybe we're talking about an 8kbps/slot requirement? I can most certainly be wrong.
