Athlon 64 x2 4000+ @ 2.1ghz Can't OC with MOBO
Bahh, So I'm using a GT240 on this stock mobo and stock CPU, and I'm planning on upgrading to a Core 2 Quad Processor.

I'm pretty sure the power draw from the core 2 quad Q8300 doesn't draw that much power,.

So I'm wondering how well does this old processor work with BCBF2 and what not?

Currently I'm running cs:s @ 20~60 Fps :( major bottle neck!

Sorry for the random ranting XD, well back to the main topic!, with a though on switching a Athlon 64 x2 dual to a possible Core 2 quad Q8300. How well does it compare to a Phenom II X4, Intel i3, and an Athlon II x4. Will my graphic card bottle neck (Gt240) with this processor?
 
Your going to need a whole new motherboard for whatever you choose, and probably new ram. Give us a price range on what your looking to spend on a new motherboard/ram/proccesor. A new processor will definitely help your fps in source games.
 
Phenom II's are worth their money better than the Core 2 Quads. Core 2s are now 2 generations, and over 4 years old.

You need to give us a price. One way or another, if you want to upgrade your CPU significantly, it means a whole new motherboard and probably ram too.
 
Well My cousin is willingly to lend me his LGA 775 Mobo, with DDR2 Ram @ 667 frequencies, for a processor, I'm planning on spending about 150$ or around that price range. Just wondering, in comparison how would a AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition Dual Core Processor compare with the core 2 quad?. I head the BE for that CPU is pretty decent even though it's old and cheap.

the C2Q will destry the 7850.

2 more cores+better architecture

might wanna look arround on ebay for 775 procs, usually cheaper than buying them new.
 
Oh alright, but I'm also wondering, would it be worth it to fully upgrade my computer (go from ddr2 ram to ddr3 ram) (AM2 Socket to AM3 Socket) and aim for the AMD Phenom II X4 820 Deneb 2.8GHz and ask my cousin for a CPU fan which should total up to about... 250~300 dollars or so compared to the Core 2 Quad core (150 dollars provided that I can have a free working mobo that supports my DDR2 Ram)
 
I have a core 2 quad, Q8400, and my dad has a Q9550.
They are not very nice thermal wise, but they take a lot of degrees and won't mind 100 degrees celsius for some reason...
My Q8400 Goes 60 degrees idle and 100 degrees under heavy load lol... getting a new cooler for it, but it's not BSODing or anything for some reason.
Epi, if you've got an AMD installed, you can't just plug in a core 2 quad.... either way you need a new motherboard, and intel will cost you a lot more, they're better, but more expensive. Also AM3 is pretty flexible and once you've got that phenom II in place you can always upgrade later to a hex core if you so wish. Remmber you're also going to DDR3, which is faster and cheaper than DDR2. Also consider getting a mobo with maybe 2 PCI-E 16X ports, incase you ever feel like crossfire/SLI.

you are doing something wrong
 
8x 8x SLI/Crossfire is currently not an issue that needs to be worried about. There is a good article on the matter here:

With that said, you do not want to be in a situation where you have a 4x slot with a gpu in it.


It's worth pointing out that BC2 is currently cpu limited on all core2quad series chips. If you are building a new system now I would highly recommend going with a 2500k and P67 chipset (just make sure you get one with 8x/8x pci-e slots for sli/cf if you plan on going that route in the future -- honestly, if you only plan on playing on a single monitor, I wouldn't worry about this either). Core2Quad's and current AMD Phenom chips are incredibly outdated at the point in time, and are therefore not an advisable upgrade.

Here is a very interesting post on BC2 being cpu limited on a Q9650@4Ghz -- his fps doubled when he moved to a 2500k.

Eurocracy: 100C is WAY too hot for a C2Q. Most people try to keep those under 75C max when overclocking. Either your temp is reading wrong, your heatsink is installed wrong, or you have overvolted far too much for your heatsink.

The Q9550 is overclocked to 4Ghz, while my Q8400 is as stock specs. I'm assuming a problem with the heatsink so I will be fitting my new one tomorrow, the coolermaster V8. Should work much better assuming I can get the thing to fit in my case without having to mod my case
 
The V8 is overrated. Don't get it.
Get the V6, if you must get a CM cooler.
 
I much prefer the 212+ to my V6GT.

I own both, and the 212+ cools about the same, and is much quieter.

It arrived today, now I'm worried -.-
Even if it works as well as the stock cooler SHOULD have it'll be a big improvement.
Yeah the V6 does seem more powerful in testing, but only by a couple of degrees, so I guess it should be fine for my needs.

It should still be a great improvement over the stock cooler.

I wouldn't be concerned.
