Guys..im afraid..minitransactions..minitransactions everywhere..

That which is seen cannot be unseen, which is a real shame when it comes to things like this video created by Microsoft that details the company's plan for a connected, social, casual gaming experience characterized by bright colors, microtransactions and ceaseless interaction with online "friends." The importance of Avatars, representing the "style, attitude and character" of each person's online identity, is a big point of emphasis, as is the ability to easily search for, find and share new games and media across multiple platforms.

The focus here is clearly on the casual market. The video kicks off with FarmVille before switching over to an American Idol contest being held by the "Idol Mom's Group." Next up is another woman shopping for a new virtual dress for her Avatar, followed by a different woman who jumps in to play some online Bejeweled. The core gamer demographic gets a bit of a nod at the very end, when a guy decides to slack off at work to help out a buddy playing some Battlefield 2 by buying him a better gun and then immediately misspells "pwn3d."

I don't even know what to say here. Maybe I'm being overly harsh, or maybe I'm bitter because I'm feeling left out, but if this is what Microsoft means when it talks about taking the PC seriously as a gaming platform, I think I'll just go back to watching television.

Spotted via Reddit, the video above delivers a vision of a terrifying future of chirpy avatars and 160MS point dresses. Some initial thoughts.

1) They don’t know how to spell pwn.
2) WHA!?? I don’t even…
3) I hope this video is about two years old. The companies they’re looking to court with this microtransaction enabled future are so far ahead in their thinking on this that they don’t need Microsoft’s help. Nor would they ever let MS cross-sell to their customers, nor would they offer up a cut in their earnings for access into Microsoft’s network take a cut of their earnings. They dismissed the Xbox and they’ll dismiss Games For Windows because Facebook does everything they need, better and to more customers.
4) Seriously – if you’re going to try and talk to PC gamers, spelling pwn right is really important.

If this is seriously what Microsoft is wanting to do for PC gaming, they should burn as a business. They obviously don't know what their customers want, they're just guessing based on what's popular to the casual crowd. It seems like they're trying to be the next best thing, again. They are already the inventors of Windows. What's the matter? Not satisfied with being nearly 90% most used OS? Not making enough billions of dollars?

I'm sticking with Windows 7 if this happens...

... the hackers will move on to WGX if it does come out, so even if Microsoft stops supporting 7, I don't think we'll need to worry about security issues.

Oh, and apparently the next Xbox is going to come out in 2015, so we don't need to worry about them releasing games that don't support Windows XP-7 for a while.

this is ridiculous...they can't pin the pc gaming market when they have no idea what customers want and what the market is all about to begin with.
if i want to mess around with cartoony avatars i'll buy myself a wii

I can see now, Me and loads of other hardcore gamers have to rebel and take down Microsoft when we're older.

Please don't let this happen!

Yeah that 2015 thing is just icing on the cake, gotta love delaying tech. Not sure why console gamers are so content with that and letting the xbox stay alive through gimmicks. By 2015 the xbox is going to look ancient. And devs are going to have to stay on their current standards for making games. And PC gamers will get the same things since the devs are stuck with consoles.

So it's like xbox UI on PC....

Not concerned. Steam will still be there. And if they somehow block steam, there will be some giant lawsuit......

Ugh. The future for PC gaming looks bleak indeed just because of WGX.. Keep the Xbox stuff on Xbox. I don't want any of those ugly avatars on my PC.

This is just going to appeal to the casual crowd. Oh, how they piss me off. It'd be funny if they try to target the hardcore segment, because I don't see this garbage putting a dent in Steam's popularity anytime soon.

So like Windows Game or w/e that is going on right now? The same people that play farmville will love this, while people like us will continue to go on our way.

I love how Farmville was demonstrated.

For the casual crowd, I wouldn't be surprised if this became successful. And people wonder why the economy is so bad. Facebook apps, MS Points, monthly Xbox payments, and overpriced iPhone apps add up.

I wish they would realize we're not the casual gamers. It actually takes some thought assembling a gaming PC. So what makes them think we need this garbage?

I bet in Redmond, there is a person who has a million dollar idea, and actually knows something about PC gaming. But since he's not the big cheese sitting at a round table, it will never be noticed.

I don't think Microsoft really cares what it's customers want. They just want to have the next best thing by "improving" what is already out there, instead of actually doing anything innovative.

I'll admit casual gaming was a bit irritating at first, but now its more mainstream and more accepted and gameing is less viewed as "creepy guy sitting in his parents basement" now this could be a bad or good thing

Bad things could be that game developers figure "oh they dont know what a good game is lets make the same crap over and over again" or developers put all their resources into the casual games, leaving more hardcore gamers out in the dust

Good thing is that it could lead more people to play more hardcore games and lead developers to create more, better games. It could also bring gaming into a popular medium like tv, movies and other stuff that are considered normal.

Some of you guys might not agree, but its hard to stop it now and these companies know it and continue to make loads of money, but what i hope they learn is if they get casual gamers into more hardcore games, they'll make even more money because they are generally more expensive which could lead to more money put into developing better games that we'll actually enjoy.

The only thing I saw that was objectionable was the transaction section. Paying for weapons?

Other then that, nothing wrong with people using avatars and searching for games.

basically they have to depend on the devolpers to go along with it u can publish software on windows without there approval its a free market developers do not HAVE to go along with it and i doubt they will un support windows 7 beside devolpers have to make there game compatible with the new windows if they only run on 7 there snot much Microsoft can do about it
