Ok... so I'm sitting here at work and for some unknown reason...
I started to think about all the fun I used to have playing Starsiege: Tribes .... what a great game.
I played it from 1998-2001. The hackers killed the game for me.
Too many to count by 2001.
Then of course they released Tribes 2 and much much later Tribes: Vengence.
Neither of those games ever had the following that the first one had.
The first one was epic..
First FPS where you used a jetpack to move around at high speeds.
It was a open environment unlike the closed confines of Quake.
Don't ge me wrong... I love quake . But this was something new and special.

It was a masterpiece of a game that really never got the credit it should have.
Mainly because of marketing and competition from the likes of some other heavily marketed FPS games. (Half-Life, Quake, Unreal)

Well back to my thoughts of the game this morning.
So I decided to find out whatever happened to the developers of Tribes.

Turns out after Dynamix dropped it , Garage Games picked it up. Then they in turn sold the Tribes name and IP to Hi-Rez. Indie Developer best known for the game Global Agenda.
Hi-Rez will be making a Tribes MMO.
While that sounds somewhat interesting. I'm mostly intersted in Tribes as a FPS.

After a little more digging. I found that there is a spiritual successor to Tribes 1.
But this time it has a new name.
Legions: Overdrive
It's currently in public test mode. Free to play.

Oh man.. I'm excited.

Here is a video.
Btw.... used to be called Fallen Empire: Legions
Now it's called Legions: Overdrive

Signed up, starting it up as we speak, hopefully it's as good as the original! If anyone else picks it up my nickname in game is "Majestic"

Some of the original Tribes devs are working on this, having moved from Dynamix to GG to Hi-Rez. I've some friends and "insiders" who keep me and some others posted, as I belonged to one of the most popular base-CTF servers back during Tribes and Tribes 2. Pretty much us Tribes fanatics perk up when we hear Tribes, FPS, and jetpacks.

P.S. T:V sucked majorly. Those who loved Tribes that remained playing Tribes 2 didn't really move over to T:V. Since then, we've been waiting to find another game like it to play.

P.P.S. The gaming clan (or "tribe" as they were called) was Rebel Dawgs.

I was on just now and the servers are really empty, the U.S. servers are all empty, the only ones that have some sort of activity are the DE servers. The game has potential though! Refreshing and gave me some nostalgia. I'm going to try it again later on today maybe it'll get a little more active.

In other very related news..... just found this..
Hi Rez announced Tribes Ascend

Tribes: Ascend, developed using the Unreal 3 engine, is being positioned as the multi-player successor to the much lauded Tribes 2 and a re-introduction of the franchise to the gaming world.
Hi-Rez Studios acquired Tribes in October, 2010 and revealed plans to develop a massive scale, persistent world shooter called Tribes Universe. Today’s announcement confirms that long-term franchise strategy, but Hi-Rez has chosen to first deliver the single-purchase, digital download Tribes: Ascend this calendar year.

“Before Halo, before Modern Warfare, and before Battlefield, there was Tribes.”, says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. “Tribes fans appreciate the game’s essence - athletic FPS combat combined with teamwork and strategy. As we began development of Tribes Universe, we focused first on capturing that essence - refining and modernizing iconic elements like jetpacks, skiing, and vehicles. We’ve had tremendous fun play-testing and realized the potential of a multiplayer focused title ahead of Tribes Universe. The community has been waiting for a multi-player shooter that is the modern successor to T2. Tribes: Ascend is that game.”

Tribes: Ascend is targeted for release in late 2011 as a digital download on Windows PC and the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Additional platforms are currently under consideration as well.

Our First Fleeting Glimpse Of The New Tribes Game

Mike Fahey — Our First Fleeting Glimpse Of The New Tribes Game Fans of the deep, strategic, jetpack-powered combat of Tribes have been clamoring for a new game since the 2004 release of Tribes: Vengeance. Hi-Rez Studios delivers this year with Tribes: Ascend, a downloadable game for Xbox 360 and PC.

Hi-Rez already had a pretty good head start on creating a Tribes game in their massively-multiplayer online shooter Global Agenda. In that Unreal Engine 3 powered game, teams in combat armor jetpacked their way across futuristic landscapes, participating in massive multiplayer battles with other players.

In the Unreal Engine 3 powered Tribes: Ascend, players will likely be doing something quite similar.

We first thought Tribes was coming back in 2009, when gaming portal InstantAction teased a new version of Starsiege: Tribes playable in a web browser. InstantAction went down last year, and Atlanta-based Hi-Rez Studios revealed that they were the new holders of the Tribes license.

Hi-Rez teased a persistent-world version of the game called Tribes Universe. While that game is still on the way, Ascend is coming out first.

"Before Halo, before Modern Warfare, and before Battlefield, there was Tribes.", says Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios COO. "Tribes fans appreciate the game's essence - athletic FPS combat combined with teamwork and strategy. As we began development of Tribes Universe, we focused first on capturing that essence - refining and modernizing iconic elements like jetpacks, skiing, and vehicles. We've had tremendous fun play-testing and realized the potential of a multiplayer focused title ahead of Tribes Universe. The community has been waiting for a multi-player shooter that is the modern successor to T2. Tribes: Ascend is that game."

We'll no doubt see more of Tribes: Ascend as the year progresses. Seeing as Hi-Rez Studios is only three exits down from me off of Georgia 400, maybe it's time for a road trip.

Also, I tip my hat to Hi-Rez for calling the game Ascend, a name so easily bastardized should the game not live up to expectations.

Here's the game's website too:
