EdgeGamers Organization Newsletter
April 2011 Edition

This is no April Fools day joke; it is the April edition of our beloved EdgeGamers Organization Newsletter. As always, we've been busy with many things here at eGO. There were changes among leadership, perhaps most noticeably Ill Legend's promotion to the position of Divisional Council. We would like to congratulate him for this, we're extremely grateful for his dedication to the community. More information can be found in the Counter Strike: Source section of this newsletter.

Each of our divisions are as eager as ever to tell you what they have been up to and what they have planned. Some highlights are the inclusion of new games to some divisions, and the rapid growth of other games. Keep reading to find out the many triumphs (and few tribulations) our community achieved in April.

With the new First Strike map pack released for Call of Duty: Black Ops, we're happy to announce that we now have a Downloadable Content Only server. We'd also like to inform everyone that you can still play on servers with the DLC Running, however you will be kicked if the server rotates to a map that you don't have. Our other servers remain the same and we’re yet to decide if we’re adding in new maps to any rotation.

Bad Company 2

With the growing hype surrounding Battlefield 3, the Bad Company 2 division has been flourishing, with people jumping back into the game invigorated by the BF3 teasers and trailers. Events are being redesigned, recruiting is on the increase, and the servers have been staying strong.

The famous Squad Rush Tournament has been redesigned, and the next one is planned to take place around April. The tournament has been changed from its normal squad rush mode to squad deathmatch, and with such a big change new rules must be made to accommodate the different play style. In terms of other events, the Counter Strike: Source division made an unexpected invasion into the BC2 servers as a part of their Road Trip event, resulting in a fun and hectic night. The sheer success and turnout of the event has spurred BC2 leadership into trying to get more frequent inter-divisional scrims. Although not completely satisfied with setting their sights on divisional dominance, leadership has been speaking with other clans to try setup clan-wide scrims.

In the recruiting area, BC2 has been pulling in an average of 47 recruits a month. This steady number is expected to increase with the legendary Blindy joining our ranks. Blindy is the only person within eGO to have over 200 recruits under his belt and so his skill and experience will be very welcome towards the recruiting effort. In addition to this, the BC2 recruiting program is being redesigned from scratch by Slazenger and with these combined improvements, the future of recruiting looks very bright.

Constant quality recruiting leads to strong server rankings. Over the course of the last month every single BC2 server has made significant progress in terms of server ranking, and as such there are no plans in the near future for server changes. The Hardcore Rush server is now ranked 35th in the world, followed by Heavy Metal which jumped from position 304 to 63rd in the world. Additionally, Hardcore Mix Mode which is currently 88th up from 291 last month. The 24/7 Vietnam Phu Bai Valley server is ranked 264 in the world making it the divisions lowest ranking server, although the server has been improving significantly considering the server was ranked 1007th on March 5th.

The BC2 division has been improving in all areas, from events and scrims, to recruiting and servers. Make sure you hop into the Bad Company 2 Ventrilo rooms whilst you’re playing to get in on the teamwork and hear the jokes and laughs.

The event coordinators are still running their weekly events and some big events are planned in the future, with some enticing prizes possibly being planned such as free DLC passes and other cool stuff.

Counter Strike Source

The Counter Strike Source Division has some exciting news, as many of you may already know. On March 13 our former Division Leader, Ill Legend, was appointed to the Divisional Council, where he joins Mostly Harmless in representing the CS:S Division. The void created by Ill Legend's promotion has been filled by iamevilbear, who was promoted to CSS:S Division Leader on March 21.

Ric was fortunate enough to interview Ill Legend regarding his promotion and the CS:S Division generally. He said “I'm excited to be more involved with the clan. I have already done a lot more than I had as a Division Leader, and I am having a blast doing it all.”

Ill Legend also reports that server popularity has been good, although Office seems to be decreasing in activity. He would like to see Division members focusing on that server and getting people in it. It would be a shame if the Office server, one of our oldest servers, is changed due to lack of activity.

On a more positive note, Ill Legends notes that there have been a lot more people in Ventrilo the past month, probably because of the popularity of Minecraft. CS:S Leadership would like to remind everyone to be active on the forums, in Ventrilo, and in servers.

Our newest Council Member has nothing but praise for the CS:S Division, remarking, “My favorite things about the CS:S division would have to be the players and the people in the division. Without all the people that I meet and talk to on a daily basis, I wouldn't be here. There are a lot of great people in the division and the clan as a whole. I absolutely love and enjoy every second of it."

Ric also had the opportunity to speak to Beta, an Advisor in the CS:S Division. He notes that the recruiting drives are really doing quite well. Attendance is up and so is the number of recruits we bring in. He also recognized the value of adding recruiting guides to the recruitment forums.

Last month, Beta, together with Parvovirus, Mayhem Death and The Judge began hosting the weekly recruitment drives. Recruitment drives are held every Tuesday at 9:00 pm EST. The events ran quite nicely. Beta is pleased with the recruitment effort, finding that, “When it comes to recruiting, we really stand out by bringing in recruits and filling in the servers at the same time.".

Special accolades go to Scion, who has been named as the CS:S recruiter for the month of March. Scion's dedication to the team has been a big help and the division thanks him for dedicating his time to recruiting, along with the rest of the recruiters.

In an interview with Fart Vader, who leads the CSS:S scrim team, he talks about competitive play within CS:S. More specifically, they play 5x5 matches with short rounds and intense playing on both sides. The scrim team focuses heavily on building teamwork, and go into matches with a prepared strategy for each round.

Anyone is encouraged to try out, even those who are less skilled, as long as you are prepared to work hard. There is little doubt that the Scrim team will make you a better player. Your pure skill will be enhanced by your new knowledge of strategy and by learning the maps we play on.

Scrims are held nearly every night, and a typical practice consists of a 10-man inter-clan scrim followed by Fart Vader's critique. Fart Vader provides comments and pointers which will whip you and the Scrim into shape in no time.

Fart Vader has this advice for players new to CS:S who are interested in the scrim team. "All it takes to be at least a decent player is practice. Join some of our 10mans, or join a random one through IRC. Instead of playing on a huge 20v20 server, go play on a smaller more competitive one once in a while..Oh, and get a microphone. :D”.

The most commonly utilized weapons in competitive matches are Awp, AK47, M4A1, Deagle, mp5, shotgun. The shotgun and the mp5 are used less than the rest, and usually in the early "save" rounds. A save round is where the team tries to spend as little money as possible, enabling them to have better weapons in the future.

Fart Vader would like to thank his dedicated scrim members for constantly improving and working unconditionally hard. He says” Well played, fellas.”.

Day of Defeat: Source

Kalt is back!!!
That’s right, thanks in part to multi-stage voting and thread discussion, the Day of Defeat: Source division replaced the Argentan server with Kalt Fast Respawn. Argentan had replaced Kalt last year, but has not lived up to expectations. The latest rendition of Kalt features Fast Respawn. Rather than waiting an indeterminate amount of time, players will respawn 4 seconds after being fragged. The server switched to Kalt Fast Respawn on March 28, 2011 and has already proven popular with eGO members and pubbers alike. As a side effect of Kalt becoming a full-fledged server, the Kalt Event on Friday nights will be removed from the event calendar and replaced with a new event to be decided. Perhaps leadership will use a vote thread to select the new event.

In addition, two other events will be rotated out this month. Due to lack of popularity and a desire to mix things up, both Monday Melee Madness and Quick Draw Night (Tuesdays) have been canceled. “This was done to rotate in new events and shuffle the events we currently have,” said C-WHiT, advisor in the Day of Defeat Source Division. This means the award on the forums, DoD:S Gunslinger, which awards the top 1-3 kills on pistol night, will no longer be available.

Realism Campaign 4, Final Battle & Realism News
On April 2nd, the fourth campaign of realism will be wrapping up in what should be the most exciting and swash-buckling to date. Realism Campaign 4 is the most successful campaign so far, and with realism already established in eGO, the Realism Unit stepped it up by incorporating the basic principles of the board game Risk into its organization and style of play. Both Axis and Allies fought in some amazing battles in an attempt to change history. This campaign is one of the most tightly fought to date with several battles coming down to the last man and the last second. If the previous battles prove anything, it’s that the Final Battle will be one to watch.

Campaign 5 will begin in approximately one month and promises to be, once again, the most popular event in eGO. Make sure to pay attention to the DoD General forums to catch the important threads and sign up in the registration thread when it is posted. Realism 5 is certain to continue evolving, and we are all looking forward to rewriting history once again.

Avalanche rocks the charts
Another bit of good news is that the Avalanche Server has retaken its (well deserved) position as the number one DoD:S server WORLDWIDE! Thank you to all who helped. Let’s hop on our servers and keep Avalanche on the top of the charts. We can’t forget about our other servers though. Donner is always popular, as is Strand. Flash recently experienced some rough patches so don’t forget to hop in to get it populated.

Promotions
A shout out to all the recipients of promotions this month. Congratulations everybody on receiving their Gs or Os and look for Admin 101 and Advanced Admin classes to learn the ropes of how to be an effective eGO admin. Many of these promotions have been ‘field’ promotions creating an exciting atmosphere on many of our servers.

eGO’s newest Advisor
Last, and most certainly not the least, we are forced to give due consideration to Stormy, the newest Advisor to the DoD:S division. Please make sure to send a quick message congratulating him on his promotion. Leadership had this to say about Stormy shortly after his promotion: “He was a great candidate, has been here for a long time, certainly knows the system, and has run Realism from the beginning.” Essentially Stormy epitomizes all that eGO stands for and his promotion to Advisor represents the best aspects of this great community. We caught up with Stormy the day after his promotion to talk about how he felt about joining the DoD:S leadership. “When I was dragged into DoD leadership the first thing I thought was “so the bribes paid off! To be honest I’m very proud to be able to do more the for clan and more specifically the DoD:S Division,” he continued. “There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and I’ve known that for a while, now I have the chance to participate.”

Special Thanks
I would like to give thanks to C-Whit, Stormy and Jeod66 for providing some great material this week. As can be seen, April’s been an extremely busy month for the DOD:S division and bodes well for the future.

Strategy

The Strategy division has been doing great this past month.

First, a few changes have been made to the Minecraft server that have caused a lot of chatter in the community. The Minecart Mania mod was removed due to it causing server crashes. It was replaced with CraftBook, which flaunts many cool features such as gates, elevators, hidden switches, etc. While CraftBook will allow many more options for players, it doesn’t feature automatic farming, so you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way. Matt With A Catt has been working very hard with other DL’s and Advisors to create more Minecraft events which will be coming soon.

The STR Division also hosted the Weekend of Minecraft event on our Ventrilo server. EdgeGamers was kind enough to donate some t-shirts as prizes for the event.

Second, Runescape and LoL are doing fairly well but there’s room for improvement. LoL has just established weekly events that include ARAM, IN HOUSE, and BRAVERY, so you should definitely check those out if you haven’t already.

Third, StarCraft 2 has also launched some weekly events; King Of the Hill Night on Tuesdays, Study Group Night on Thursdays and Friday Night Fights on Fridays, of course. If you are looking to have fun, meet new people, or just get noticed, you should definitely check out these events. For more information, see the StarCraft section in the Strategy Division forum.

Last, we’d like to thank our recruiters as numbers are up this month. And congratulations to everyone who was promoted in March. Keep up the outstanding work and continue to be an example to all of the community, and to all of the players who play on our servers.

Team Fortress 2

For the month of April, Team Fortress 2 Leadership has kindly allowed us to see what’s happening behind closed doors with some cool insights.

The Event Coordinator Program has brought on a new member in the last week, ModusPwnens. We are very excited about what she’ll bring to the team. Participation has been on the increase and the events just keep getting better and better. Make sure to check them out.

We hosted several new events and tried out some new mini-games. One particularly successful new event was the Highlander event. 9v9, one of each class, and it was an absolute blast. We suggest that everyone try it out sometime.

A favorite event, due to how much teamwork is involved, is the 6v6 PuG (pick-up game). Another favorite is Monday Madness and EdgeGamers Hour.

Our Class vs Class events have always been very popular and well attended. March attendance continued the tradition.

We mentioned a Basketball Event in the month of March. Unfortunately, it had to be delayed until next month due to some technical issues. It's definitely coming up this month though. Signups start soon.

TF2 Leadership would like to thank event coordinators and encourage people to be active in Ventrilo, and the Servers. Remember, promotions are coming up again.

Admin Training is one of the few voluntary programs in EdgeGamers whose duty is to train new administrators, discuss various policies and answer any possible questions the admins may have in the Q&A forums. The program focuses on maintaining the high quality of admins throughout EdgeGamers.

There are a lot of benefits with the admin training program. Apart from hosting basic and advanced admin classes, the TF2 Admin Trainers develop admin scenarios each week, which allows admins to test their knowledge and ability to think outside of the box. Our Admin Trainers are highly experienced O members who are always happy to answer any of your admin related questions or give you advice. The current ATs are: Mobilize, GreatNate, ModusPwnens, and Too_Tall. eGO thanks them for their dedication.

Remember, never be afraid to ask any questions. Use Ventrilo, it's a great admining tool and a place to hang out. Also, when a senior admin asks someone to handle a situation in the server, we encourage you to step up. It's a great way to get experience and show your admin capabilities.

March has definitely been busier than February. We had a bit of a lull due to school finals, and then breaks, but we are back in action. We removed one server which is helping to focus our population in the remaining servers, thereby increasing ranking. Overall, it's been a great month so far and we look forward to seeing what the rest of April has in store.

We had a recruiting/training drive at the beginning of the month which had a decent turnout (Thanks PSC). We have also launched a new Recruiter of the Month program where you can win a hat!

Finally, we may have one very big change coming, but it's not definite at this point. Keep your eyes peeled though. Oh, and get in Ventrilo!

The Alliance guild is coming back from its recent downfall with more raids, more dungeons and more heroics. Let us clue you in; a dungeon has five adventurers, a raid has 25 to 40 adventurers, and a heroic is an adventure for those who have attained the highest levels of experience. The Horde is still going strong.

Game news; patch 4.1 is coming out soon. We are expecting the dungeons of Zul-aman and Zul-gurub.
