Okay, so I built my gaming computer a couple months ago. At first, I had the Cooler Master 690 II case. Really liked the case. Roomy, good cable management, drive bays that you just snap components into (as opposed to using screws). It was pretty nice.
But I started running into problems. It seemed that whenever I touched the front panel ports or tried to plug something into them, my computer would either freeze or go to a black screen. It wouldn't turn off; it would just go to a black screen, and the monitor would go into its idle state. This would also sometimes happen even if I went up and down the stairs and then simply walked near the computer. Touching the metal front panel of the computer also resulted in this problem.
I wasn't really sure what was going on, but I was sure it had something to do with static electricity. I decided to experiment with what would cause this problem to happen. I did deduce that touching the metal front of the case or any of the ports (including ones on the motherboard) would cause the problem. I then removed the front panel and touched the metal chassis of the case. Even with large amounts of static electricity built up, nothing happened when I did this. The screen didn't even freeze. I found this very odd.
Thinking it was just a problem with the case (I had read several reviews about this happening to people with the same case), I returned the 690 II and bought an Antec 900 SE and put all of my components in it. The fact that it's a very high-rated case and the large fan on the top enticed me to get it. I later learned that the cable management sucks. And I don't like how you have to screw all of your 5.25" drives in. But, oh well.
Now I figured my problem was solved. However, once again, my computer would freeze or blackscreen on me if I even touched the front panel ports or motherboard ports. I've been dealing with this for quite a while now, and I think I'm out of time to return the case. I can touch the metal parts of cables on the side of the case before plugging them in to discharge any static electricity in them, and 95% of the time my computer doesn't experience any problems once I plug the cables in. However, this is annoying for me, and it shouldn't be happening anyways, which really bothers me.
tl;dr: I think there may be something wrong with my motherboard. I've had two cases do the same thing to me: If I plug something into the front panel ports or the motherboard ports, without first touching the cable to the side of the case, my computer either freezes or turns to a blank, black screen. I suspect static electricity is the culprit, but I really have no idea why this is happening. All of my friends can touch their gaming rigs or plug stuff into them without any problems.
Again, I think there may be something wrong with my motherboard. Or maybe there is some grounding issue that I'm overlooking. I'm not sure what the think anymore, though.
Any ideas and/or input are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
