Vent spammers

Before I leave and start playing bc2 again why did we need a rollcall and how do you know if you filled it out cause I did mine last night because I have been studying for some major tests and don't know if it went through

Your entry was added.

Thanks for the link on normalization. Somehow last night one of the guys spamming said a knock knock joke, and when he screamed it made BC2 crash to desktop... Or at least the timing was insanely coincidental.

I think there are other, technical issues that may help resolve this.

I have been a part of other gaming communities (ones that usually don't enforce their own rules on their members, which is why i inevitably left them) that use software to solve spamming issues.

I'm sure some of you might know the TacticalGamer servers/community.

They used this with teamspeak 3

There has got to be something similar for ventrilo which, while adding to the time to get onto the vent server, is still automatic and does not require extra personal which is really the issue.

Then there's options like mumble - best for FPS.

If you guys don't want to look into server side additions or other programs, then perhaps at least having two-three locked channels (per active game division) with passwords that are changed weekly on the forum.

It's not much effort and the payoff is huge.

If someone wants to join the locked channels, he either is already in game and can ask for the PW which someone can then message him (in vent, as he can be in an unlocked channel).

If you don't want to sit in a locked channel think of them as emergency shelters. You go there when you have to.

As to last night on BFBC2, it was brutal. It's possible that the spammer on vent then went and crashed our servers, check the logs of players. WE were being spammed on vent when a 'new user' logged in and asked us where we were. Me, being new and recognizing like three voices said " Rush HC".

Less than a minute later we crashed.

The individual (or potentially group, there were multiple accounts spamming last night at the same time but that doesn't mean much).

Unfortunately, after Austin did lock our channel, the spammer then went and PMed/Whispered us, with text/code & raw frequencies that crashed my vent, and freezed my screen, along with busting my sound card drivers for my headset. (Happens at least once at day when i'm on our vent anyways) I don't have this problem when I'm in other vent servers, so I know it is related to this guy. I believe the only solutions to that would be a completely locked server/turning off PMs/Whispers (which has it's own problems).

I understand and respect Edge Gamers stance on keeping the community open, but this goes beyond irritating I believe. I too have lost a set of earphones in the past, and while I don't think that will happen regularly here even with these guys, it is a possibility.

Ok, People. When I responded to this thread yesterday with post #3, I was stating eGO policy, not opening the floor to opinions for change. The open vent is a council decision, and one I fully back and believe in. Edgegamers will always have an open ventrilo, I can gaurantee that. Passwording will only create more hassle then it's worth, and there is no real point, because anybody could get it. Spammers and soundboarders are annoying, but fleeting. \

In short, to close our ventrilo goes against the core of what edgegamers stands for and believes in. It's how we grow, maintain, and hold the positive image that we've worked so hard to create. It's how we make friends, and meet new people. It's our single greatest recruiting tool. Closing it would remove all of this. Ventrilo will remain open, even if the decision did rest in my hands.

Your headset must be made out of paper or something if some loud music can break them. Srsly.

Well can we please do something about the spammers Ive wasted over $400 alone on multiple headsets as well as headphones that have been ruined by spammers

My face when I read this:

Seriously, normalize vent and don't have it at absolute maximum volume. My expensive headphones have never even winced at spammers.

:O I just mute them idiots :thumbup1:

Or hopefully find eGO member with rights or DL that will deal with them :)

Finally you can record it if you like and put it in as a attached to a suggestion Drop Box. for help :)

Ok so In case some of you haven't noticed there have been alot of people spamming and crashing vent as well as bc2 servers my suggestion is that we put on Pw on the vent servers and only give it out to ppl who we know are trustworthily members oh and I can't use my headset anymore because the spamming ruined my sound as well as my speakers

If you have normalization set correctly the spammers cant ruin your headset, Again what Left said. Also the BC2 Servers is unrelated to spammers.

This should have been a drop box post in the first place. I know this has been brought up plenty of times, but passwording channels does in fact create more problems, like Leftenant said earlier.

Passwording channels, or the ventrilo server, will only make little "groups" or "clicks" within the divisions. You have to look at it from a pubber's perspective: How would you feel when you joined an "open" community on ventrilo and you either had to sign up on the forums and wait for the password, or somehow get the channel's password? They will see all of us sitting in our own private channels, making it seem like they have to be welcomed and accepted first before they can join our chat.

Open channels does make it easy for spammers to come in, but almost every single time I have been in ventrilo and a spammer has decided to grace us with his presence, he is dealt with very quickly. There are very few occasions where there is not an Advisor on to help.

All you guys need to do is normalize your Ventrilo. When a spammer does decide to come into one of our channels, minimize your game (BTW 'Alt + Enter' puts BC2 in windowed mode, making it much faster to minimize as compared to 'Alt + Tab') mute the individual, and seek an eG or an eGO so we can contact an advisor. If no one is around to help, I can bet you that another division's advisor would have no problem banning yet another spammer.

This. I'll bother anyone with an [Advisor] tag in vent if I need a spammer banned.
