Questions about minecraft.

I'm bored as hell and I'm thinking of picking up minecraft. I know the type of person I am and if I were to get this game I'd play it religiously and become anti social and whatnot. Is there a way I can play online with other friends and make things in a world we can all share? Like I'm thinking of getting this game so me and my gf can play something together. Also, in multiplayer can a bunch random people join my world like if it were a pub server or something if I wanted to? Do we have a group for minecraft or a server for ego?

Last question. If I feel like making stuff in my world in private, can I then later open the world to the public, and then close it and whatnot? Cus I don't want to play single player in one world, and then lose everything I did in that world by playing in a new multiplayer world. Get me?

I'm rather confused...

But you cannot keep your single player world the same as a world on a server without constant copy-pasta'ing.

And can I make some areas not be allowed for people to edit and whatnot? :3

Probably some admin mods that do that.

Definetly play it considering they closed down the beta anyway (which really doesnt do much)
