I realize some people in the community might not be aware of what Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is. The simple definition: It is a Defenders of the Ancients (DotA) remake that was developed during the same time frame that League of Legends was. For those of you not familiar with DotA, it is a real-time strategy game focused on teamwork and coordination where each team attempts to destroy the enemy's base.
Beta started in April 2009 and the full game was released in May of 2010. The game has a huge player base, with a few hundred thousand players signing on daily. The graphics are arguably better than League of Legends, although HoN has a $30 one time charge (a free trial is available for those of you interested - see below). There is no reoccuring subscription, just a single payment. The game has 78 heroes, all available from the beginning (unlike LoL), no unlocking needed. Each hero has special abilities and moves to assist in the fight.
Two teams consisting of 1 to 5 players duke it out to try to kill the enemies heroes and work towards destroying the enemy's base. Both teams have NPC "creeps" which automatically assist in working towards the enemies base. These "creeps" are not controllable, but they are quite smart, working with you to take out the enemies. Players level up and earn ingame currency by killing creeps and the enemy heroes played by actual players. The currency is then spent on purchasing items from the ingame store, which can give you bonuses and unique powers. Combining different items can create special items/recipes, allowing you to make unique moves and get the upper edge.
