Nintendo has officially announced its intention to release a new console in 2012. According to a note published this morning on the company's Japanese investor relations website, "Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011."

The terse announcement does nothing to clear up rumors surrounding the system, which has been linked to high-definition graphics, motion controls and a handheld touch screen. Less trustworthy industry sources have even indicated that the system's rumored codename, "Project Cafe," hints at its ability to shoot a cappuccino directly into your gaping mouth.

According to the investor note (posted after the break), Nintendo plans to show off a playable model of the Wii successor during this year's E3, which takes places in Los Angeles from June 7th.

To whom it may concern:

Re: Wii's successor system

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.

:O
To bay I cannot go to E3.

of course, last time when they claimed to have a playable wii at E3 it was just an upgraded Gamecube. I wonder if this will be any different.

Don't take that the wrong way though, I have thoroughly enjoyed my Wii. Without it I couldn't have played Monster Hunter Tri.

The biggest reason I got the Wii though was for Zelda: Twilight Princess. Now I'm worried they'll delay Skyward Sword (that is the name right?) to coincide with this new release.

Oh my poor wallet...

ok, and then when Sony and Microsoft release their next console it will be for obsolete.

I'll have to catch a replay of the conference, again. -.-

Hope its a good move from Nintendo.

Maybe they'll start a tradition of cross-generation Zelda games :P

That's neat and all - but I'm still waiting for Skyward Sword to come out. I'm kind of ticked actually that they're coming out with a successor. I understand it's all about the 6 year cycle, but I mean.... Now my wii is going to be more outdated than it already is and I haven't even begun to play all the games. I was thinking they would keep updating the Wii but I was dumb for thinking that.

Darn that 6 year cycle. I just hope Skyward Sword comes out soon!

hmm.. I don't get it.. does this mean I have to buy a new console ? or can you buy upgrades to the old wii ? It's too early to make a hole new console in my opinion.. not that many good games out yet, just a few

They'll probably do a similar deal for when the 3DS came out (following closely behind the DSiXL) and giving you %40-%50 off at certain retailers when you trade in your Wii.

And there you have it, I guess this confirms that they will be showing a new system at E3. We probably won't find out anything else until that time, though, and it's likely the only reason they sent this out is because the rumours started.

Reviving old threads....WOOO! Don't get why this thread was revived, since we know about the WiiU already.
