ABOUT
The division was originally activated as the 9th Division (drawing units from NC, SC, and TN) under a 1917 force plan, but changed designation after the outbreak of World War I. It was formally activated under its new title in October 1917, as a National Guard Division from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The 30th landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy on June 11, 1944 and secured the Wire-et-Taute Canal and began its spearhead advance to the St. Lo break-through. On the 24th & 25th of July 1944, the 30th received one of the most devastating friendly-fire incidents of the war, when a sudden gust of wind blew the smoke (marking the bomb drops) into there position. Ten days after this occurred the 30th stopped the enemy spearhead (Operation Luttich), then pressed on to help with the fall of Maastricht.
