Hey guys,

I just recently updated Windows 7 to SP1 (yes I massively procrastinate on updates) and now EVE won't start... I don't know if this is purely coincidence or what but I've deleted my EVE data and reinstalled it twice now to no avail. Steam also insists that the files are all in working order. Any time that I try to boot, it gives me the EVE splash screen but will not start (even after waiting like 30 min.)

Anyone else having this problem?

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 x64.

Running Windows 7 SP1 64 bit here with no problems.

I'm on an AMD 9850 with an ATI 7870 graphics card.

Have you tried googling to see if anyone else is having an issue?

Also do you have to be logged into steam to play eve?

Yes, I do run the game through the Steam client, but without issue until two days ago. Updated all drivers for my vid card (EVGA brand NVIDIA GTX-275) and also updated directx. Googled the problem, but there aren't really any definite solutions, and the ones that do have the solutions are for problems that I'm not having :/

There is an eve repair tool at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\eve online\repair
It's a repair app put out by CCP. Give it a go and see what it tells you.
All your toon's info is saved on the servers, so worst comes to worse, you can just do a clean install, and you won't lose anything but time.

Ran it, and it asked if I wanted to update the tool so I said yes but that failed... restarted it and ran it and it claimed to fix everything. Them Steam decided that it actually screwed up some files so I re-did the "verify game files" or w.e the selection is, it downloaded files that needed fixing and still no joy.

I think I'm going to do system-restore and see if that works

Or just run it without steam? I bought it through steam (for the option of running it through steam), but I've found the non-steam client less buggy and less likely to act up.

What Caco said. Just because you bought it through Steam doesn't mean that you need to run it through Steam. I've heard of several people who have had issues with the Steam version of the client due to the auto-update acting weird.

I'd suggest just uninstalling the Steam version and then downloading and installing the stand-alone version. I've had several accounts that I've started through Steam, but then ran via the stand-alone client.

(Edit: I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, but have not yet installed SP1. I prefer to wait a bit after service packs come out to see if anybody I know has any issues to report. Liked EVE not working. :-P)

I run stand-alone client with no issues. Then again, I'm running XP, but that should matter that much.

Run as admin.

The default path is in a win7 protected file path. Which will require elevated privileges.

Hope this helps.

Also, don't system restore, you're going to break more things than fix by rolling back a SP with a restore. If you're interested in results, download and install the stand-alone version. Should use the same directory as Steam does for overviews, etc, so that should persist.

If you're interested in a solution, crack open your application event logs (Start > eventvwr.msc) and dump the log file for immediately after the game crashes. Post it up here and we can probably figure out what's holding it back given some error code or whatnot.

EDIT: Moving to tech help.

Those temp files aren't even there when I search for them, both folders are empty (not because the files are hidden, there's just nothing there)

Elevated the exe's privileges to run as admin and still nothing

Even though it doesn't work, thanks a million to you guys for the suggestions - never know what will put something back into working order. And on the bright side skill training doesn't finish for like 4 days hahah

The temp files only exist as long as the error screen is up. To get copies of them, leave the error up, then copy the temp files to your desktop or Documents folder...

<edit>
Found some forum posts with similar error messages... you may want to try deleting all files located in this folder: (where <User> is your Windows user name)
C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE

Bear in mind, that deleting the contents of that folder will delete your local preferences for the game. This will include overview settings, chat channels you are in, etc. I would suggest backing that folder up first before deleting the contents. That way, if it doesn't solve your issue, you won't have deleted your preferences for nothing.

(Conversely, if you ever format or get a new computer, you can copy that folder over to your new machine to preserve all of your preferences. It's a pretty handy trick.)

Also, appdata is a hidden folder; the best way to get there is windows+r, then typing %APPDATA% and hitting enter. Good luck finding it via the gui :p.

(Seriously though, at least on win 7 64-bit, that folder might as well not exist via the explorer- you can force it to show hidden and system files and folders, and you still won't see this one. Annoying.)

Anddd... RESOLVED! I hope... hahah

Researched some more and the errors were pointing to "nvd3dum.dll" as being the cause of the failures. Some research showed that programs such as Fraps (older versions) and EVGA Precision could cause the application to crash on startup (This applies to basically any game that either application integrates itself into). I removed EVGA precision from my startup applications and now it works.

Maybe this will help someone in the future. This also seems to be a recently developed problem specifically w. Win 7 SP1 and the NVIDIA 3D drivers clashing against each other. Thanks so much to everyone for all your help
