I thought this was rather interesting to put here, as it gave me some theories on HL2 Ep3.

Gabe Newell said:
That entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that you're connected with other people.

Single-player is great, but we also have to recognize that you have friends and wanted to have that connected as well.

It's not about giving up on single-player at all. It's saying we actually think there are a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single-player games to recognize the socially connected gamer.

In the same interview, Newell mentions a reason for having Half-Life and Portal in the same universe. And he also says, "When you're thinking about games, you sort of want to think about how characters collide."

HL2 Ep3 co-op with Gordon Freeman as player 1 and Chell as player 2, anyone? I'm thinking it's possible.

Having the main character as a mute is certainly possible, obviously, but suddenly adding a second protagonist to a game who's main character is also mute won't fit too well, me thinks. Yes, we have been introduced to her in portal, but the developers have to assume that their audience hasn't played every game out there so they will be forced to characterize her again. When you play as a mute in a single player game, being told what to do, it is possible to characterize through actions, but when you add a second player to a story that already has fully fleshed out characters, the new person must play catch up or have the story suddenly focused on them. I don't think Valve could do this effectively and still provide the same fantastic writing and story as we're accustomed to. Not to say that Valve doesn't have awesome writers, just that it's an extremely challenging idea.

Also, we all know that Alyx wants the Freeman, Chell will just cause a cat fight.

tl;dr No, I don't think it's possible :P

I do think that some sort of portal device will be in episode 3 though. That's not really a major statement though, we've been seeing Aperture Science since episode 1 if I remember correctly.

No, Ep1 was way before the idea of Portal and Aperture. Aperture was only mentioned at the end of Ep2, with the Borealis.

Anyway, I was never very sure about the Chell part, but I'm more sure that co-op will happen.

You are correct, but in episode 1, well let me quote the wiki.

Alyx then locates and downloads a transmission from Dr. Judith Mossman describing a certain project she has located, before being cut off by a Combine attack.

We aren't told that it has anything to do with Aperture, but Valve surely knew and we get the hint in episode 1.

Sorry, I had to.
