Vayne rune discussion

Why would you ever start with a longsword over a Doran's Blade on anyone but Warwick?

Because it's 200 something gold wasted. Granted you dont always get to the point in the game where you do have to sell your Doran's item, but I generally dont get one unless I really really NEED the 100 extra HP.

Most caster are better off with Sapphire Crystal or Meki Pendant. Support might want Mana Manipulator. Or shoes with pots. Tanks might want Ruby Crystal or Regrowth Pendant. Plus starting with one of these items gets you a lot closer to your second or third tier items. I'd rather have a pair of shoes and Brutalizer than Doran's Blade and two Long Swords. Well, the Brutalizer even without the shoes. Then there's Tryndamere and Gangplank.

I could list a lot more champ specific items that are great for them over Doran's, but you should get the idea. Overall they're a poor investment unless you are going super aggressive until your opponents first shopping trip.

Doran's Blade allows you to farm in your lane that much longer with the extra 100 health and 3% lifesteal, thus making up the extra gold lost when selling it back, and putting you ahead in experience. The longer you stay in the lane getting last hits the better. A long sword isn't a good starting item on ANYONE. I never mentioned any other starting items but the long sword.

Regardless I think you will find while watching high elo streams that nearly everyone starts with either a doran's item, boots and 3 health potions, or cloth armor and five health potions. The reason for all of these is sustainability, not building towards your next item.

I have armor pen marks health per lvl seals and magic resist per lvl glyphs.

As for quints, movement speed and armor pen is the way to go. Attack speed seals also work, just like Corki.

health quints don't benefit on carries as well as they used to.

I always start with boots 3 health pots, and on my first way back i get 1 or 2 doran's blade, as carmine says, for sustainability.

Vayne can be built either the triforce /madred way, or the regular infinity edge/ last whisperer carry build.

my personal runes for vayne are as follows, arpen quints, 7x arpen marks and the rest is crit chance.
22 arpen and 8.1% crit chance with masteries equals 28 arpen and 10% crit chance. this is where you start to see 200 damage Q procs at level 3 with a critical hit and Q bonus on top of it.

i've tried defensive runes of hp quints arpen marks armor seals mr glyphs and other combos and its very lacking. you're squishy enough that a little bit more defense is just that, a little bit more defense...it doesn't counter your weakness at all through runes/masteries so i decided to go full out offensive in that department
plus with a little practice and such you'll get used to your positioning where at least the laning phase won't be much of a problem for you, taking damage wise

Meh. Looks like i build all wrong. I focus on doing the most damage i can and focusing on armor pen, along with doing high damage crits. My runes focus on armor pen, crit dmg, and attack speed. Then in game i focus on a bit more armor pen, attack speed and crit chance. I always get a life steal as my health is low, but my dmg output more than makes up for it. Even the tanks go down with a breeze with my build. The only problem is that this is a setup for later game, although i have no problem with begining game either
