Sony Restores PSN Services Around the World
10:50 AM - May 16, 2011 - By Jane McEntegart -

The drought is over.

Sony Saturday began its phased reintroduction of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. The progression comes roughly one week after Sony missed its own projected deadline for the PSN restart. Since things kicked off during the weekend, Sony has restored PSN and Qriocity services to all of the United States and Canada.

Kazuo Hirai - PSN Relaunch Announcement

Included as part of the restart is a mandatory software update that forces users to change their account passwords. This update was actually made available on Saturday, prior to the restoration, but Sony recommended people update in preparation for PSN being back online.

?We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online,? said Patrick Seybold. ?The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure.?

However, it seems that once PSN was back online, the influx of people trying to change their passwords all at once proved too much for Sony?s system. An update on Sunday confirmed that the company was having trouble dealing with the load.

?We?re currently experiencing an extremely heavy load of password resets, and so we recently had to turn off services for approximately 30 minutes to clear the queue,? Seybold said. ?As such, a large number of people are attempting to change their passwords at the same time, it?s taking longer than expected for all those emails to clear all of the ISPs. If you?ve requested your password reset, please give it a bit of time to reach your email.?

According to Sony's EU Twitter account, services for all of North Amercia, South America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and the Middle East are now back online.

About time it's fixed. Lol.

I'm surprised people even want to have a PS3/go on PSN at all.

I know I don't. I'll wait and make sure they don't have another incident like this before I log back on.

I have a PS3, but I don't use PSN at all. I use it to just play singleplayer or watch blu-rays. I rely on my PC for online multiplayer.

Its a shame How easy it was for anonymous to hack in to the PSN me my self was never a
fan that much But i do plan to get one Sooner or later

At least you know it is secure for sure now.

Sony ain't lettin' that happen again.

Now xbl/NWFC who knows......

That's sad. I don't see Sony ever fully recovering from this. The handful of people I know who own PS3's have gone from fanboys to pretty much stating, "I will never own a Sony product again."

I read that Japan won't allow PSN back until Sony proves that they have properly fixed their network, and still aren't satisfied. I mean, Sony OWNS the Japanese market; if those guys are forbidding it, you gotta know somethings amiss.

Could this possibly be the end of the PlayStation?

Japan Refuses to Approve PSN Restoration
10:20 PM - May 16, 2011 - By Jane McEntegart -

PS3 and PSP users the world over might be overjoyed with the fact that PSN is finally back online, but the same cannot be said for Japanese fans.

This past weekend, Sony confirmed that it was beginning a regional, phased restoration of PSN and Qriocity services. The news followed weeks of no service and during the outage Sony maintained the reason for the lengthy outage was that Sony was trying to do its job and make sure users’ information was as safe as possible. However, it seems the Japanese government isn’t convinced, as it’s blocking the restoration of PSN until it can verify that Sony has taken care of a few issues.

Dow Jones cites a Japanese regulatory official that Sunday said Sony would not be permitted to restart PSN until the company can, among other things, provide more information about how it plans to prevent such attacks from occurring again in the future.

"We met with Sony on May 6 and 13, and basically we want two things from them," Kazushige Nobutani, director of the Media and Content Industry department at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, is quoted as saying.

The first is preventative measures. Nobutani says that as of May 13, Sony was been "incomplete in exercising measures" outlined in the company's May 1 press conference. For security reasons, Nobutani did not provide details about the areas in which the government believes Sony is lacking. The second thing the ministry wants is for Sony to share how it plans to win back consumer confidence. Sony says it's currently in discussions with Japan and working to restore service based on those discussions.

"We are still in talks with various authorities (in Japan and Asia)," a spokeswoman for the company told Dow Jones before adding, "By receiving advice from the industry ministry, we would like to have the service in Japan ready."

It’s not known how soon Sony can provide the ministry with what it requires for the restoration of PSN. However, previous comments from the company suggest that it hopes to have full service restored by the end of the month and we can’t imagine this taking longer than that.

If you think about it though.

hundreds of thousands of people vs. the few people Sony can hire.

Who has more brain power here?

Sony fully deserves what they got, but you gotta put it in perspective. It could happen to any one.

Lesson learned here: don't sue people for stupid *crap*
