This should be a duzzy. I know most are going to disagree with me but I reaaly think that smoking an exit is wrong especially if its exot of field on Donner, just to get in cafe of get tank. You all know they do wht we do they fire into the smoke or use it against us to move up. And yet most of us smi=oke again when you get back to the same place. Come on folks the only reason I think its good to smoke is to cap a flag and the smoke is right on it. Our rifle guys and sniper who work hard to cover a spot like the tank are blinded all the time not to metion it gives the Germans a chance to move to tank house. So can we please atleast try to cut down on smoke its bad for our health. Thanks you This message brouth to you buye the smoke grenades association of snipers. tHANKS YOU

lol.....
smokes are part of the game and very useful
just get an mg to spray into smoke

I agree with Magnum.
smoking a mg is very useful because he can't see you but you are able to hit him exactly because of the light when he is shooting!

Personally I don't like smoke because it blocks sniper vision and limit movement so much that you might step a nade or run into an enemy without knowing. As Gen.Sniper said, instead of smoking at tank of field exit, there're other alternatives like throwing it into 2nd flag or their sniper house so they'll be blind instead of our side.

yeah i use them to block out snipers and MGs. also i like smoking a falg and throwing nades in there so they wont be able to see the nades

One of our eGO SR, Nottsack, is in the military and posted this in the SR forums, but i felt it was applicable to this thread.

I am taking some time and explaining smoke in detail. I am a Forward Observer by day so I know a little bit about the subject. Smoke is used for three purposes. Concealing, obscuring, and harasment . You use smoke to conceal friendly movement or obscure enemy view. This sounds like the same thing but its really not.

The idea of concealing via smoke is to lay smoke so you can move to a new position. You absolutely should not have to move through the smoke to get to your next position. If thats the case all you've really done is obscured both your view and the enemy's view for a short time. So lets take this as a scenario. Very often when we are playing on our beloved Kalt we are in the situation where we need to take the bridge. Many times have I seen players smoke their side of the bridge. What does that really do? It prevents your snipers and machine guns from seeing the enemy and it keeps the advancing force from seeing what they are advancing into. The ideal way to do this would be to have three or four guys throw their smoke to the opposite side of the bridge to try and cover the entire width that they can shoot you from. I know that this isn't always easy but even if you can conceal half of their route it is better than nothing.

Obscuring the enemy is a much easier task. Pretty much this would be just landing a smoke grenade on top of or very close to an enemy mg, sniper, or any other camping position. A good example of this would be smoking the left of the wheelhouse steps on the allied side, or the wheelhouse door on the axis side.

Harassment smoke is a tactic that we use in the Field Artillery world. It works like this. We will call in smoke and then once the enemy's view is completely obscured we will call in HE (High Explosive). The same tactic can easily and effectively be achieved in DOD:S. Pop your smoke grenade and then follow it by fragmentation grenades. It is good to have a support class with you for their extra grenade support.

I hope you guys find this at least some what useful. Ill try to share info and guides as I can. If you have something to post, please do it. There are many new Ratz who are info-thirsty.

I generally agree that smoke should mostly be used to blind the enemy and cap their flags. However, it is sometimes useful as covering for setting up an mg or getting out of a situation where you are pinned down.

smoke grenades are used for cover, thats what i think

I use it to blind the snipers in the opposition, knowing that im also blinding the snipers in my team. But with smoke, theres greater chances for us assaults and supports to move up without getting picked off by snipers.

I play on Donner, whenever you see smoke in the mid, its because of me :)

Thats what makes the game challenging and fun. It means you can't just camp right inside that little building with 4 windows and a sand bag but have to go out and wreck some havick up close.

I actually wish people would use smoke more efficiently. While i was playing with my fellow Dam Busters on Strand, as America, I had gotten the group to throw a mass smoke. It looked beautiful, and we were able to win the match.

Smoke is awesome. Smokers, now thats another, not as awesome, story.

Smokes suck...what's the point for 3 assaults to smoke our 2nd when we have middle (AVA) and block my view?

Gen Sniper
i agreed with your concerned
I am a fan of orange map, but guess what? you cannot expect the same rule in every round, every game

When your team is not strong enough to take over the mgs, snipers, for example, fight_herna, you really have to smoke the mid flag before you can continue to move
if your team is working cooperatively, smoke may be optional
I myself like to rush and always get a lot of people down by that reason too

i also played in custom map, smoke is really helpful too
like the tank one, i think that's donner and santo, without smokes and grenades, and when other team is strong, haha, i bet you will lose no matter what

so smoke and grenades are extremely important
but yes, i know it gives a lot of trouble to snipers and rifle guys, but still, have to consider other position too, assault, supports and mgs also need smoke to cover in order to advance, right?
I myself also played sniper role a lot...

so we have to tolerate one another in a game, right?

hmm now that i think about it since the smoke grenades for the axis look like exactly the same to the frags. you could chuck one at an MG forcing them to run out of their spot if they mistake it for a frag and then you can mow them down.

All is fair in war is what I take on it. Smokes were and are an important aspect of war, and having smokes in the game adds realism. The point IS to blind your snipers so that men can move up. Smoke nades are an ectremely important and useful aspect of war, so therefore should be able to be used freely and strategically.

Well my conclusion and view on smoke grenades and the negativity around it is due to lack of communication between teammates.

Well to go more specific, smoking recklessly blocks snipers on BOTH sides, but well that help? Yes and No, Machine Gunners can still shoot through smoke and mow down anyone caught in between. The worse yet is you can't see the grenades or your enemy, making Both or You blind.

Tactical smoke with communication is the way to go. Like any other gun, abusive usage will lead to negative results on the team. Positive and effective can go a long way.

That's my 2 cents..

Disrupting the view is kind of the point ...

There's multiple uses of smoke. Hide your position from the enemy, disrupt the enemys line of site and confuse the enemy. Throwing smoke where you want to be gives you (although easily penetrated) instant cover. Rifles will have a hard time finding you and automatics aren't much luckier if you're hugging the earth. Of course you won't be able to engage any targets. Throwing smoke where the enemy is allows you to blind a firing positioning allowing you time to move up while keeping your ability to engage targets open. Throwing smoke down one path while traveling another could confuse the enemy. Most MG positions will immediately open fire on smoke screens revealing their position for you to engage.

Yes smoke, like unprimed grenades, can pose a risk to your own team. Effectively used those they can easily turn the tide, even against greater odds. Coordinated smoke screens, decent support fire, grouped rush efforts... that's the formula...

People are less likely to yell where they will throw grenades at when FF is off ^__^

my belief is that is EXACTLY what smoke is for, so you know my opinion on that
