I wanted something to have on me on long car rides or extended periods of doing nothing outside of my house, however I don't want to get an expensive current-gen handheld because I'm saving up for the NGP and a few games in January (or febuary, since it comes out Q1 2012). I was thinking of getting a Game Boy Micro because I can't think of any GBC game that wasn't ported to GBA thats worth playing.

Get a laptop and an emulator.

You're either trolling or just skimmed the title and posted. Because if you didn't do either of those you'd have noticed that I said I didn't want to spend money on an expensive current gen handheld. So what makes you think I'd want to spend more money on a laptop?

I would get this

pfft forget the game boy micro, just get an SP. Very cheap and easy to find.

This. They can still play original gameboy games if you have them. I could still fire up my Original Pokemon Red if I wanted to.

Plus the illuminated back screen is nice.

I don't think any of our Pokemon Red's still have the capability to save though; pity, loved that game to death (and yes I still have my original gameboy and gameboy color laying around somewhere).

Also... wait with the NGP- at least until CFW is released. I've been spoiled by the PSP scene for a few years now, can't imagine using one on OFW again.

Metroid II [Original GB, I know]. That's your reason for getting a GBA older than Micro.
But go for it.
