T_T lonely Otaku seeking Otaku for Otaku connection LOL.

Just watched Macross F ep05 Dare I say Love triangle LOL. The ending is confusing to me though. Why is that guy out of breath, and why do they need reinforcements? I'm guessing lot of planes got shot down.
