TF2 Performance Issues? Here's a Unique Solution (Maybe)

Even if you don't have TF2 performance issues, it's an interesting read.

Quick Summary: turn your settings up. That's right. Up.

Long version:
Whatever the actual causes are, it's fairly depressing that a game this old [TF2] sometimes chugs along on my rig,** while games that came out much later, including Starcraft 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2, breeze along on the same computer at max or nearly max settings. While I haven't actually tried it, I had often wondered if my computer would fare better with the original Crysis than it would with our favorite hat simulator. Could anything make TF2 run at a consistent framerate?
[...]
With nothing left to lose, I was ready to give up Team Fortress 2 and write an angry letter to Valve (or more realistically leave a raging rant on SPUF). In one last act of defiance, I decided that if Team Fortress 2 wanted to kill my computer, it should deliver the finishing blow. I hopped back onto Chris' config site and copied the eye-bleeding maximum quality config. This was a file designed to push the game to its graphical limits, enabling console options that mortal man was not meant to have knowledge of, let alone activate. I wanted to watch Valve's bloated monster bring my rig to its knees, make it beg for mercy. I saved the custom file and booted Team Fortress 2.

121 FPS. 121 FPS. 120 FPS. 90 FPS. 119 FPS.
Wait... what? What the living :O?

Interesting. I have never had a prob running TF2. BFBC2 and BLOPS have been choppy since day one. I started to blame the developer for the infamous "bad console port", but now blame that plus my video card/proc.

TF2 has and will always be the smooth running game every other game should be.

This thread has now moved me to jack up my settings and see what happens. Thanks mr2kool4skool

I think I remember the same thing happening with Black Ops. Raising up your AA would raise your frames, which lol'd me.

the only issue ive had with TF2 was today i cant move only jump shoot and switch to my melee weapon

I can somewhat support this; my MSI GTX 460 does get the same if not better fps on all high at 8CSAA than at low with no AA at any resolution. The GPU usage also hovers at around 30% at all settings, but that may just be my system.

I don't think I ever tried max settings with my old build (E8400/4850/6GB DDR2) or if I did it was a looooong time ago, before all the crazy updates.

When I upgraded to a i5 2500k/6870/DDR3 I decided to max it out. It runs well. Maybe it would have before.

max settings makes me motion sick. I can run it on full-everything but can't play it unless it looks blocky. Go figure.

Tried the max settings with a ATI HD 5570, didn't work although. To be honest, I didn't even notice a difference in graphics it just lagged weirdly.

I just set up the maxquality script, and I've gotten better performance. I've only tried tr_walkway, no actual multiplayer servers yet, but it's still very bizarre. In a good way.

EDIT- Maxquality is baking my computer, I keep overheating. D: Going to try highquality instead.

I have the same issues, I have a radeon 4830 and it won't run well on TF2 but does with all other games. Time to pump up the graphics.
