Improving Ping

I find that once in a while I come into this game with a high ping (150++). My normal is around 50. I found that if I log out of my DSL server and reconnect, then rejoin DoD my ping will settle in around my lower value again. Sometimes this takes a couple of tries.

I think that there are many servers which I might be connected to through my DSL and sometimes I get one that produces the higher ping. The reconnection sometimes results in one that is closer to the game server which I am playing. Also, one DSL server may not be the best connection for all maps and their servers.

Does anyone else have tricks to help reduce ping???

Sigh...you guys more lucky then me with ping averagely 350-450, all the time. And that after everything off, from torrent to antivirus and firewall.

@ Alex SDU, wow thats worse than me i mean i usually get 200-300 on my 56k, try refreshing your connection and if that doesnt help, what connection are you using?

@ Bones, It also might be your DSL provider, but refreshing the connection always helps like what you said youve been doing.

Well, let me see...I'm using broadband, duh - LOL, and my modem brand isD-Link (ADSL Router) and my IP are local telecommunication company, that offer only 1Mbps speed (2nd highest speed, 2Mbps are the highest, available offered for private users for the whole nation).

Sometimes players would ask me during games like, "My God, Alex! Are you using dial-up? Why your ping so high?" or "Where are you from, Alex? Your ping so damn high!" or my all times favourite, "You have been kicked from the server due to high ping".

well some people play on 56ks too and isdn, so not everyone is on broadband. but it sounds either like its your modem, isp or maybe your comp if it has virus or spyware.

try resetting your modem to see if that helps.

Well it could simply be your distance from the server. I see that you are located in Malaysia and I'm going to assume most if not all of the eGO servers are located in the USA.

Or it could just be your computer.

Are you sure you have no spyware? That would be a major resource hog.

Well...I can't be sure if my PC completely free of spyware, but I just assume it virtually free from spyware coz I have anti spyware program that scanning my PC everyday.

As for distance, could be or could be not.

For my PC, well...I got:

I hope the info above could help you guys figure out what's wrong with my connection.

Sometimes its just the server you happen to connect to. Some of them have to go through many more nodes to get to the game server than others. Sometimes logging out and back in will get you on a different path with fewer nodes (hops). This might also find you on a less congested path too. My understanding is that is why one person could have higher ping in the same city compared to someone accross the country even though they might both have the same type of connection.

There are several connection tests that you can run at www.dslreports.com. They also provide a lot of tips on how to determine where you problem areas are.

ping in itself is the computer and also the connection (more so on the connection)

If you run the game at 1024x768 then you should get a better response time than running at a higher resolution. The only thing that would make this not true if by having a really good video card. Connections also is important and to check if your router is sending packets and receiving them well. When packets get lost, you really hate playing the game lol

Alex.....it is definitely the distance....you are half way around the world from the servers.

I played this game since 2002 and those first 4-5 years were from Singapore with a kickass cable broadband setup. My best ping to the Kettle (only server I played) was 250. Most of the time it was 300+.

My suggestion.....contact your ISP and tell them the servers IP's then ask them to get you there the best route. The SG ISP did this for me, dunno about Malaysia.

You guys right. I also suspect it might be the distance and the ISP. Lately many people complained about our local ISP connection.

Try google for 'Streamyx' and you might find most of it about the complains. Streamyx (nicknamed Screamyx) are provided by TMNet (nickname TMNut by complainers), a branch for the main telecommunication company in Malaysia, the Telekom Malaysia Bhd.
