Decoration day/Memorial Day

I just want to take a moment to remind everyone that today is memorial day. I feel that a lot of younger folk often skip mindlessly over this day. Today is the day to honor those who have fought in war and died. Those to died for our freedoms and for the freedom of others.

I'd also like to extend this day to not only stand for those in our armed forces but also to those in EMS, firefighting and police work as they put their lives on the line everyday to selflessly help others.

From the Martyrs of the Race Course to the soldiers of WWI and WWII that fought to defend the world against oppression and genocide to those now who fight so that others may live. May you always be remembered, may you always be decorated.

Does anyone have a personal hero that lost their life in a war? or helping others? does anyone have a friend or family member that has died while selflessly protecting? If so please honor them by name or story in this thread.

My Great Grandfather fought in WWI and WWII. Once he was taken prisoner by the Germans and was with them for 9 months. When he came back from the War he had flat feet from all the walking.. I don't know much about him but I'm more interested now and going to find out more.

May all those who go to war serving this country find themselves safe and sound, stay the cause and get the job done, and then return home to their loved ones soon.

My father of my grandfather, was taken prisoner by germany (He lived in Netherland just like me, which is next to germany). He escaped and walked over 200 miles home, pretty cool.

Fortunately mine lived through the wars:

Norbert Brinkmann 2nd Lt. US Army (OCS) Father
WWII Artillery Instructor, Home front

William Brinkmann 2nd Lt. US Army (Battlefield Promotion) Uncle
WWII Forward Observer, European theater [Bronze Star possibly Silver can't find the record]
Korea [Knighted (not hereditary) by Korea, not sure what their word for it is but same thing, he done good]

William McKey PFC? brother in law
Vietnam (Bill doesn't talk about it much)

Ferdinand Brinkmann immigrated from Germany, reputed to have been an officer in the Civil War for the Confederate Army,
was captured, gave his parole, and fought for the North as an officer. He was in it for the money. Family legend, may be true; Brinkmanns are known for their practicality.

I couldn't even imagine having to go through that!

Wow! I wish I knew this much about my family :[

great grandad was a sergeant major in WW1 whos tasks included among other things collecting the dog tags off the dead in no mans land, was wounded numerous times including getting shot in the face going through one cheek and out the other, he also refused getting commisioned as from what ive been told he didnt have the money to live an officers life.

my grandad started as a bren gunner in WW2 but got moved to the signallers as he was too smart :P he took part in numerous campaigns inluding fighting rommel in africa and the middle east campaigns.

i wish i knew more about what happened but neither are alive anymore and they didnt like to talk about war when they were, most of what ive been told is from my dad.

Grandfather on father's side. Major. He helped with the supply chains to the Pacific theater.

Grandfather on mother's side. Captain. Army pilot on the B-25 Marauder (called the widowmaker due to its high landing and take off speeds that killed inexperienced pilots, the b-25 has the lowest in combat causality rate of WWII but one of the highest causality rates overall.)His plane was shot 3 times while flying but he made it back all 3 times. Also had the highest navigator test score of all time in his pilot school, but he refused to become a navigator because it had always been his dream to fly.
