New Computer Build

I want to replace my Dell XPS with the following build:

CPU: Intel Core 7 2600K
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD7-B3
Memory: G.SKILL 8GB F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLD
Video Card: EVGA SuperClocked 015-P3-1582-AR GeForce GTX 580
Hard Drives: 2 x Western Digital RE4 WD2503ABYX 250GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s (RAID1), 2 x Western Digital Caviar Black WD1501FASS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW
Power Supply: CORSAIR Gaming Series GS800 800W ATX12V v2.3

Thoughts?
 
1. No SSD? The hard drive selection seems kinda weak.

2. There are better choices of power supply.

Seasonic X650 is only $10 more.

1. SSD? Are you joking? SSD is not worth the money that I could spend on faster traditional hard drives. Sure, SSD drives are great for booting off of, but with what I do on my system it will fall flat on it's face. Good for booting, bad for everything else in my experience.

As for the drives being "kind of weak", I would not call a 64mb cache hard drive "weak". In my experience, these drives have outperformed even the newest 10K RPM drives. The RAID1 operating system configuration will offset the performance of the drives slated for my operating system, I understand that, but I can trade that small amount of performance for reliability and data recovery any day.

The two storage drives will be separate single-disks - one for my games, one for my software. Nothing weak about those disks in the slightest.

2. Possibly. I prefer to have something along the lines of 800w, rather than the 650w. I know the eVGA card says it recommends a minimum 600w PSU alone, but again - that's a recommendation. Although I did choose the power supply based upon the manufacturer of my case. I know there are 750w and higher PSU's with better reviews.

I haven't done the math as to the power calculations on the system yet, so I don't know exactly what the minimum and maximum power draw will be right now. I am also leaving room for upgrades in the future (SLI, more drives, dual sockets, etc.). The thought of dual-sockets with two quad core CPU's is also intriguing, but that would mean I would most likely need to purchase a server motherboard. I would almost venture to say that a server motherboard would suit me better actually.

1. Raid1 does not improve speed. It only mirrors the two drives. If you can find me a mechanical HDD with <.1ms access times, you win. SSD's don't help just with booting, but overall system responsiveness as well. The whole system just feels faster. And if you get a big enough sSD, you could put a few games on it.

2. 600 rating is already inflated to account for people that have cruddy power supplies that cannot output their rated wattage. In reality, you can probably get away with 500W, but 650 gives you some nice headroom.

If you want all that other stuff you mentioned, then you are probably going to want more than 800 anyways. 850 is really the sweet spot for 580 SLI.

1. I never said RAID1 improved speed. RAID0 would, and RAID10 would be amazing to have, but I don't need that kind of overhead (4 drives minimum, capacity of only 2). RAID1 would be for my OS in the event a drive failed - being able to replace a drive and rebuild without losing data is a major concern for me. Not so much for my software/games as it is for my operating system. Plus, the case is hot-swappable.. that's a major plus in my book!

I don't really NEED <1ms access times. Although it is tempting based upon their throughput speeds. Windows 7 and TRIM support with the newer MLC SSD's have helped a lot of the issues that plagued the original versions of the SSD's that I have worked with on servers (and bad experiences to go with them). I'll have to think about it a bit more. I've still heard horror stories of SSD's failing in epic fashions faster than traditional hard drives.

2. My old gaming desktop had 600w in it, but I DO prefer to have some headroom.

Can't say I am a fan of SLI/CrossFire as it is. I would invest my money moreso on RAM, storage, and CPU power than GPU right now.

Since SSDs have no moving parts, they have a way lower failure rate than mechanical drives. I don't really understand why you are so worried about your OS drives though. C: is probably the least secure/most failure prone part of any computer, storing valuable data there is just plain stupid. I think if something on c: is that valuable, you should consider moving it to its own drive anyway.

I tend to keep my pictures and that sort of stuff on my C: drive, and Windows itself obviously. Losing my software and my games I can deal with - easy to just reinstall them. Having to reinstall, update, and reconfigure Windows? Not so much. My software stays off my Windows drive obviously for performance reasons.

Too many experiences with servers both Linux and Windows have taught me that much!

As far as I am aware the 64MB cache drives "fail" on users because they fail to understand what the RE4 drives are used for. Those are where the majority of drives have failed. They are designed for RAID applications, and the Caviar Black drives are not. Of course there are always bad drives out there regardless..
 
why r u using 2hdd? u crazy i would of got a 1tb samsung spingpoint. and about the ssd there are nothing WRONG WITH THEM i back up reflex on this one. if u buy a pos ssd like a cheap kingstone yea it will fail. CORSAIR are good ssd. plus u do not need an 800w psu. ur comp wont use 800w it will use like 30% of it really u want a 750w or 700w psu antec they r good and cheap sometimes. plus THE I7 SANDY BRIDGE IS NOT AN I7 ITS AN I5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it has been like that since its release. you r better getting an i5 then i7 due to the fact of over paying for the same thing. to be honest this is a fail build with the hdd, cpu and psu. i would not even buy this.

Above guy does not know what he is talking about as far as the naming of the new cpus.

SSDs are the single greatest upgrade you can make nowadays given the bottleneck of mechanical drives. Trust me, I do not simply reboot my computer all day to watch how quickly it starts.

The high powered PSU is for my ability to upgrade to SLI, install more RAM, storage, and even swap out for a dual socket motherboard.

For 850w, get the seasonic or corsair 850w gold version. Will leave you to upgrade for sli in the future.

I don't think anyone really needs such speeds, but if I am spending a lot of money building a new system, I want to make sure I can maximize it's potential. Don't do any benchmarking at all usually.

The lack of grammar/formatting...it burns!

and the i7 is definitely different than the 2500

It has:
-Hyperthreading
-2MB more cache
-Higher binned

I really wouldn't recommend trying to run SLI 580s on 800W PSU. 850 is a much more comfortable range.
