Need help choosing a new power supply

I was going to recommend the corsair CX400 I got for 20$ along with my 460 but it seems to be replaced by the CX430 (which actually is quite a bit weaker where it matters).

You don't need more then a good high quality 400W unit for that setup, I ran a GTX460, 9800gt AND a Q8200 folding 24/7 on my CX400 for 5 months.....Its all you need.

Wow, haha, can't believe I forgot the GPU. I have an EVGA GTX 460. Updated original specs post.

If $30 really isn't possible, I do actually have a total of $50 to spend right now. I really don't want to spend that much on a power supply, but if that's what I must do, then that's what I must do.

That is, even if my rig requires more than a 500W power supply.

Your rig really doesn't *need* more than like 310w, but the absence of decent 300w units forces us to look at 400w+

1 PCIe connector. He has a GTX 460 (2 PCIe connectors) so that won't work.

I'm still sticking with "This is a very bad idea." You need to increase your budget to about $60-80. If you don't, you will regret it in the future.

They make these magical things called "adapters" that "adapt" molex to pcie.

The one you linked is about as bad as the one in the OP. Passive PFC is an instant redlight that it is either really old, or just plain cheap.

You may have to up your budget, a power supply is the last place where you want cheap, as a cheap psu possibly won't even last very long to begin with.

Raidmax power supply is really an overrated ~400w unit, and even at those loads, it is kinda iffy.

The CX500 is decent, but for this user, the 430 would be fine.

like said above you don't want to go cheap with the PSU, however I love coolmasters and corsair either would be a good purchase in my opinion

The extreme 460 is not designed to handle 460w, they took what should be a 380w PSU, (a mediocre one at that), and slapped a better rectifying bridge on it, and called it a 460w psu..... Even at 380w or less, it is still mediocre in the ripple, and voltage regulation departments.

Idk about that coolmaster, maybe i just like to be safe but 460W and 18amps seems a bit low? not to mention it has 1 6-pin connector, gtx460 needs 2 correct?

Yes, because it is not designed to output anywhere close to 460w

I find it quite quiet actually.

My folding rig consisted (been dismantled now) of:
i7 860 @4GHz
GTX 260 (or 6870 depending on the season)
1 HDD
bunch of fans

all powered off a CX430 (v1)

Most of what he said was ok. In the sub $40 range, you are really looking at only the CX series.



That said, the CX430 v1 is not as good as the v2. The v2 they upgraded the rectifying bridge, and a few of the other components, so that it can acctually output it's rated amerages/watts, so if you have the option, get the v2
