I was reading the obituary of the legendary actor James Arness (Gunsmoke) this afternoon and saw the following. I had no idea...

"I was honored to have served in the army for my country. I was at Anzio during WWII and it makes you realize how very precious life is," Arness wrote.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 26, 1923, Arness later served in the Army and was sent in 1944 to Anzio, the Italian beach that the Army said was the setting for the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind.

Arness was wounded in his right leg and received the Purple Heart.

well i would not say the largest and violent armed conflict. but indeed it was a horrible battle, and should not be forgotten in history.

on a side note largest land or sea engagement i would consider would be Gettysburg, Iwo Jima, D-Day, Monticello, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, Hastings, Appomattox, Chancellorsville, First Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Somme, Brusilov Offensive, Battle of the Bulge, Huaihai Campaign, Battle of Stalingrad, Siege of Leningrad, Siege of Petersburg, Battle of Waterloo, Battle of Shiloh, Battle of Chickamauga, Atomic Bombing of Japan, Yorktown, Battle of Ardennes, Midway, Pearl Harbor, tet offensive, pork chop hill, and much much more. this is just a side note
