windows shuts down slowly

I have windows XP Pro, built system about 2 yrs ago, recently, when I shut down the computer it takes like 15 minutes to shut down. First nothing happens, the desktop icons disappear, then it goes to "shutting down" then it finally closes. how can i remedy this?

Thanks legit, one of the suggestions worked, I believe it was something with itunes that was messing things up.
