Welcome to 1999, Nintendo Wii-U wont play DVDs

What concerns me is that they would they sink money into making their own proprietary HD format.

*Shrug*

They needed more space than a DVD could provide. Their only other option would be to licence BD technology, which would likely have been just as expensive as building their own format. Not to mention that the licensing cash would have helped directly finance a competitor.

Either way I don't see why the lack of DVD playback functionality would be a deal breaker for anyone. It's not like Nintendo has ever positioned any of their consoles as an all-in-one entertainment system. Sure it may have been nice, but it's not like anyone was expecting them to include it.
 
I'll definitely get a Wii U, to play games.

My PS3 plays Blu-Rays and DVDs. I honestly don't need another player. I don't understand the big deal.

I have 20/40 and can tell the difference even when I don't have contacts in/glasses on.

What screen sizes have you watched blu-rays on? The difference is exaggerated the larger the screen is. Try watching a dvd and a blu-ray on a 50" 1080P TV. The difference is undeniable.

all i can find is that movies are brighter, that's it.

got to agree inregards to All the other devices out there already do the job. No BluRay or DVD support is not super Important as I already have 4 devices for the job. And I dont see a lacking intelligence purchase like a PS3 in my future...

Also on the comment of, "You wouldnt buy a computer without DVD or CD playback". HAHAHA, I would be building it myself... so no, I wouldnt. The WiiU is basiclly Wii + HD + new remote. It'll still run Netflix which alot of people are now using for viewing movies. So a general market entry is covered..

Who buys consoles to play DVD movies lol? I played like 4 DVD's on PS2 since launch and I have yet to watch a movie on my PS3. Game consoles are for gaming!

Actually, the PS3 was a good example of buying a console for media viewing when it first launched. Blu-ray was brand new and constantly evolving w/ BD-Live, but early stand-alone players lacked ethernet capabilities and thus people couldn't update their firmware which newer blu-ray movies sometimes required.

The companies eventually got smart and manufactured players that could be updated and thus diminished the need to buy a PS3 in order to get the best Blu-ray experience.

Early on though, if you had a stand-alone player, you were often screwed.
