I use the following....

* CrapCleaner.... http://www.ccleaner.com/download

- I love that program.... it is awesome.

* Adaware... http://lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

* HijackThis... http://filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

- Takes some training... use with caution since it deals directly with the registry. I recommend googling a tutorial.

* Spybot S&D... http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

CrapCleaner and Ad-Aware. Also, I wouldn't recommend messing with your registry.. that's a good way to mess your PC up and usually the only solution is to reformat.

Forgot to mention... with CCleaner... go to options and choose what cookies to keep, like edgegamers, and all other password protected sites so you don't have to go back and re-enter all your passwords.

Avast! Home Edition - free and, for me, it's reliable and user friendly
Spyware Terminator - free too, tend to get a bit choosy when you 1st time install it, coz it need to know which web, programs, in your computer that you need to declare safe or not. After that, it's all smooth sailing.
*ps - sometimes Spyware Terminator detect spyware/malware that Avast! miss.

I use AVG free. Ad-Aware, and cCleaner. Even if your computer is secure, I'd recommend running cCleaner; the space you can save is amazing.

I only use HijackThis! when my computer is undergoing noticeable problems which I suspect are external in origin; that is to say, very rarely. It's not the kind of program one should really run on a regular basis.
