Are we prepared for F2P?

1. make new steam account
2. download TF2 for free
3. rejoin server and cause more trouble
4. get banned again
5. repeat
6. profit???

The effort that an admin needs to exert to ban someone is as simple as a command.

The effort that a hacker needs to exert to create a new account and join the same server to continue griefing is far greater, and that's after he has re-downloaded the game and if he can even get back into the server in the first place. Our servers have been full all day, far before I have ever seen, I've only been able to get on it a few times, and that's after being put on the waiting list.

It's not as bad as you all think guys, Valve is going to come up with a system to prevent this from happening, I'm sure they have thought up of hundreds of ideas before they implemented this.

I'll just say this:

The moment we ban F2P players from our servers will be the moment we start giving in to the "elitist" stereotype that other people have of our servers. The moment we start excluding a group of people just because some of them might be griefers is the moment eGO's integrity falls apart.

This is not a time to be panicking. This is a time to demonstrate what eGO's supposed to be all about, welcoming newcomers and showing them a good time, not vilifying them without good reason.

Yeah, not allowing any free players isn't a good move.

Guys, it isn't elitism to demand that players spend a minimum of $2.50 on a key to play on premium servers. I have very little confidence that VAC with its slow acting procedures combined with this "steam guard" is enough to manage a free game. I mean look at Combat Arms! A perfect example of a free to play fps gone horribly wrong. Just in case we change our minds later, there is a plugin for only allowing premium accounts, ill make a thread for it. https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=160049

It doesn't seem right to restrict eGO members to those who play 'premium'. Here at eGO, we welcome just about anybody. It's against the entire nature of the community to restrict free players from joining.

And again, eGO is not remotely short on admins. There may be a small increase in hackers, perhaps a small percentage at best, but it'll be easy enough to manage.

It IS elitist when WE as the admins are placing additional access restrictions to our servers that F2P players aren't otherwise obligated to abide by.

Look, go on our servers, for cripes sake. I just played for like three hours, there were a few F2P guys, they were all nice, pleasant people who just wanted to have a good time and had a few, understandable questions, like "what is crafting" or "what are these new weapons I was told about?", etc.

Yes, we are going to get griefers, but probably no more than we had before. The TF2 community is not like other communities, we actually have an abundance of well-run servers, a fairly homogenous community, and a developer who takes an active interest in our well-being since TF2's success directly correlates into profit for them.

Stop overreacting.

You know you dont have to re download a game you already have downloaded on a other account. You just need to dl the server content and such. Nothing else

I wonder if there'll be an option, even if it's a server mod, to restrict non-premium players from joining servers. If it IS possible, I'm sure someone out there's going to be working on it.

A lot of communities are really upset about being unable to permaban hackers and the like with much success. One community I know is already preparing to shut down their TF2 servers and close up...

I wonder how this will turn out.

No...and no...and...no.

All of the people from other divisions can now play TF2 for free, and we are going to stop them. More people can play TF2 and be recruited and infact populate the servers more.

Here's the logic, there are going to be more players, therefore there will need to be more servers. Logically...premium players will be spread out between more servers. Meaning if we only allow them, instead of getting the same amount of players in less hackers, our servers just die.

As stated before everyone is overreacting. This is eGO, we don't stereotype players before they join a server, we welcome everyone who follows our rules, and let them in with open arms.

You seem to have missed my last post... :P

You can't compare TF2, a game run by Valve, to Combat Arms, a game run by Nexon, the company that was rated worst overall for customer service and satisfaction last year (I forgot what website did the poll, but it's some site that does yearly polls on internet-based companies). If any of you guys have played ANY F2P Nexon games you'll know that almost all of them have gone completely downhill.

Take MapleStory, one of the first F2P games that Nexon managed. In the past year that game has become so overrun with hackers that it's lost hundreds of thousands of players. The difference between Nexon and Valve, however, is that Valve actually cares about their customers. Nexon usually doesn't answer help emails sent by its clients (believe me, I would know - I've sent about 10 tickets for various games and not a single ticket was ever answered), nor does Nexon provide administrative services in their games; MapleStory hasn't seen a GM (game master) actually running around the game on a regular basis in years! We actually have admins on OUR servers.

- TL;DR -

Nexon cannot be compared to Valve because Nexon is a terrible company. F2P TF2 will be handled properly, and we have the administrative powers for our servers to keep them clean.

Yea, seems odd im posting here. but we shouldnt just ban people who dont have "premium accounts" on sight.. people might not have enough money to be able to play at all, or are merely testing out the game and are enjoying it.. Like theyve said, you guys have good enough admins to control any situation. yes, they can just make an account and come back quickly, but im sure valve will do just fine. I see no meaning to panic, panic will only make things worse. just go with the flow and see how it goes, and if we need to make adjustments in the future, do so then, not right now where we dont know whats going to happen.

Yeah, our servers are absolutely exploding with players. I need to wait an average of ten minutes to get into 2Fort IR now, haha.

We're going to need a few more servers...

This, and fortunately because of the MOTD commercials we have this should happen quite soon. Seeing as our servers will be full or near full 24/7

On a related note, TF2 player counts peaked at 70,000 users online AT ONCE. More than trippling tf2s player base.
