Premium Account Only Plugin

I'd be 100% against this.

Its a countermeasure against people backing up tf2 onto a disc, deleting their banned accounts, installing a fresh steam, and be back on the server in five minutes. It is NOT part of some elitist plot to block new player.

Unfortuantely it inadvertedly has the side effect of the latter.

Yeah, it'll block that. But it'll also block thousands of free players that have no intention of misbehaving. I don't expect very many people that have never played on eGO servers before to cough up $$ to play on them, when they could play on hundreds of other servers for free.

This will never get installed on our servers. Ever.

I think what spidEY means is that while current leadership is in charge, this plugin will never be installed on our servers. ;)

As a side note, it would be really simple for valve to create a heuristic to find people that do this. I'd say we could build something for our servers to flag people that do greif this way, but there's always a slight performance cost for adding checks like this.
MMORPGs do way more intense analyzation of player usage patterns to find griefers and cheats than it would take to find people that abuse the free to play TF2 system. But we should just wait awhile to see if this is even a problem or what steam might have up their sleeve before we go modifying our servers. :)

While im not fond of the idea yetI go completely against this idea. It is just ridiculous! While other servers may not want new players eGO will never implement this. Ever.

eGO's servers will always be 100% public. We will not install plug-ins that deny a certain group of the player base the ability to play on our servers. The only reason someone isn't allowed on our servers is if they have broken the rules and have been banned. Other than that anyone is allowed on our servers.

You also would be blocking people who might've bought the game before it went F2P but aren't getting premium (i.e. me).

I really don't ever see this happening on any servers, let alone eGO servers. eGO has always been about expanding and adding new members, not banning so many people that haven't done a single thing wrong. That would be ridiculous.

Rukus, you're making a mountain out of a molehill, especially when no actual problem has occurred yet. If anything, it's made our server counts healthy and brought a lot of nice, well-meaning new players to our servers.

Stop being childish.

I know its an unpopular idea at the moment (I'm no fan of it either), I still acknowledge that similar promises from F2P companies to get rid of cheaters have failed (Combat Arms, countless f2p rpgs, etc) and that we may not need it now (1 day into the f2p update) we may very well need it later. After all, a premium account is only $2.50 (99 cents on a mann co sale).

Anyone who ever bought the game when it wasn't free 2 play automatically get a premium account. So you wouldn't be blocked.

@ Dragz, I'm not being childish, neither did I say we need it now. If you actually read the OP you'd see that.

From what I understand if you bought the game you are already a premium member. From the FAQ"If you've ever spent money on TF2, you have a premium account. This includes purchasing the game before it was Free-to-Play, activating a retail version of the game, or making a purchase in the Mann Co. in-game store." But ya I do not see this plug in benefiting eGO.

The dedication and tenacity of our admins is more than enough to deal with any problems that could arise. It's important to take into account that such a plug-in is a too broadhanded way of dealing with a issue created by a very small minority; ultimately eGO will never discrimate entry into the servers.
While I know the plug-in has been linked with the thought of eGO's best interest, many people do not want to get a premium account because they want their free game to be free and it is impossible to justify excluding these people when eGO has grown to such an extent over the past few years that any trouble created by this change can be dealt with.
I'm more concerned over how fast people have actually started to make these elitist plug-ins, it's still only day 1 after all.

What's with the hostility?

What's with the hostility?

He read the thread title without reading the first post is my guess. I haven't been aggressive or hostile at all yet its whats to be estimated when people talk about this plugin.

I don't even understand why there's even one this early on. Can we at least wait a bit and see the end result before denying the free people service of playing on custom servers?

I'm a little disturbed about how quickly this plugin was developed.

That being said, I'm glad eGO is not going to get something like this mod. This F2P measure is a fantastic time to recruit new members into eGO. We should be embracing this change as a positive one.

What's with the hostility?

I'm hostile to any idea which seeks to exclude a group of people simply for what a small percentage of them MIGHT do.

It should not even have been brought up in the first place.
