I am thinking of purchasing a rifle, but I dont have a whole lot of money.

I really dont want any caliber less than a 30-06, but I cant afford anything that high or higher.

So, Today I came across a .17 HMR Bolt Action. The guy said its good for small game, and the bullets are fast and accurate. My question is, how powerful is it?

Its probably a safe bet to say it would kill a squirell, rabbit, racoon, opposum, and other small game. But, whats its limit. What size animal would it only wound? Anyone know?

Similar to a .22 Magnum. The casing is identical, just necked down to accept the .17 projectile. The fps on these two are very similar at ranges under 100 yards, anywhere past that the .17HMR tends to overpass the fps on the .22mags.

As for killing power, with all .22 caliber rounds or similar like the .17, bullet placement is a key factor in determining if you're going to put down whatever it is you're shooting at. These types of calibers are for varmint and "small" game. Anything bigger than say..a small deer, id go into bigger calibers. Hope this helped somewhat. Feel free to add me on here if you have any other firearm related questions.

well how much money do u have exaclly? 30-06 arent that expencive to begin with..or is it not teh rifle that is the issue is it more the bullets ur concered about?

Thank you digital and theycallmec, I sent you a friend request digital.

I have 300$, and until today I hadnt found anything in that range. I found a lever action 30/30 Marlin for 285, so with tax it will be a little over 300, but I can manage. I am considering getting it, but Im not too happy about it being a level action. I prefer bolt action, but considering I found one for my price range, I'll take anything over a .17 hmr caliber.

i was just looking around online which i guess isnt totally accurate but many 30-06 fell under the 250-320 price range and really most 22 rifles fell under teh same range

Gotta look at cost to shoot as well, .30-06 rounds aren't exactly the cheapest out there either.
