Directions to make a new sig?

Does anyone know where people like me can get information on how to make a sig? I am clueless and need a 'guide'. I have somebody helping me, but I would really like to learn how to do it myself. My thought is that if we could get a good set of 'directions' maybe we could make it a sticky in this forum.

Ugh, you have to PAY for Photoshop, which I hate. Google GIMP, it's currently in 2.0 version, many guides for it, I had this big huge one somewhere, but I mis-placed the link.
