EdgeGamers Organization Newsletter
July 2011 Edition

Our fifth anniversary has come. Though our naysayers would have never believed that eGO would be around this long, we have proven them wrong by continuing strong and ever expanding. For the Fourth of July weekend we held an amazing slew of events to highlight all of the games we support. We hope it was a fun time for those who attended. For those who couldn't make it, you certainly missed out on some fun. We expect to extend our run as a community for many more years to come, so stay with us and enjoy the ride.

The EdgeGamers Organization Newsletter would like to mention and express our gratitude to GardenGroveVW who, at the beginning of this month, has stepped down from his position as Community Manager. He had been instrumental in shaping our organization into what it has become today.

Our Anniversary promotion extravaganza was a huge success. If you have not looked at the front page since the month began, you may wish to check and see if you have earned yourself a promotion.

There has been so many things that have happened recently that you must keep on reading to learn more.

Angreifen.

Do you have and suggestions for EdgeGamers members who would like to recruit?

If anyone is looking to be involved with recruiting we encourage you to try. Come to a Recruiting Seminar for tips and learn the guidelines for successful recruiting.

Have there been any changes in PSC leadership?

We would like to congratulate CopperAle on his promotion to PSC Advisor.

Any comments you would like to make on any topic of your choice?

Bad Company 2

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is, as always, maintaining successful recruitment. This month, as of the 17th, they have twenty four recruits, so they are right on par to hit their usual 40-50 recruits per month.

The servers haven't been quite as successful in the past couple of months in terms of ranking; however, in the past two weeks the rankings are going up very quickly. Hardcore conquest mode is BC2's newest server, and it's shooting through the ranks like a hippie on fire. Vietnam has recently been changed to normal mixed mode; it's started out a bit slow, but it's catching on, so get in there an help out.

As of now, BC2 maintains five servers, all unique in their own way, and each of them are doing very well. The pubs seem to be enjoying eGO's friendly environment that our admins help create. The division is planning on having BC2 dog tag scrims. These are different from CS:S dog tag scrims, where the goal is one rank against another (e v. eG). In BC2, when one kills their opponent with a knife, they snag their dog tag, hence: Dog Tag Scrim. The different ranks will determine how many points one will obtain. A plethora of new and fun events will be coming up, such as Vietnam vet night. It's a bit harder for BC2 to hold events because they are forced to take down one of the servers, so be sure to join in on the events so that it will ensure more events in the future. A small rumor going around is that our Vietnam server is our least adminned server. Who'da thunk? So get in there and bust those punks!

Thinking of those potty-mouthed baddies is inducing an aneurysm... Let's take a look at something more positive, like BC2's members. They are always willing to step up and help out leadership, regardless of the ranking. BC2?s tournaments have been doing well with tons of members showing up each time. Seeing that events are fairly tough to create, BC2 needs your help in coming up with event ideas. If anyone has any ideas about events they should talk to Noxx, Facey, Austin, or Leftenent. It would be nice to have weekly events, so if any eGO member has ideas, they would love hear them.

Last, but certainty not least, a tip for e?s: Besides filling the servers and recruiting, it is the participation and the friendship that count. Recruiting and filling the servers are great help, and are encouraged, but utilize your main goal to make friends and have fun. The e's that tend to drop out are the ones that put all their efforts in to being noticed. They eventually burn out and leave, so don't worry about having to impress anybody or being at every single event, just do what you have time to do and have fun.

Thanks to the efforts of Stick, Johnnyblaze and Endiment, recruitment for the Call of Duty Division has sky-rocketed. They have done a phenomenal job at raising recruiting numbers from 20 to 50 new members per month, with hopes to go even higher this month. Morale and attendance has gone up as well because the new recruits are helping to fill the servers.

Each week this month the COD Division will host many events including: Modded Monday, Wednesday Noob Night, Scary Server Thursday, Friday Night Spec Ops. The weekend events are being kept under wraps so tight that not even this fearless reporter could pry a hint out of COD Leadership. Regarding tournaments, Leadership is working on bringing back Night of the Living Dead and Top Gun. A Realism tournament is also in the works.

CoD Leadership would like to congratulate all of its new G’s and O’s on their promotions and awards, and to remind its G’s that Phalanx will be giving admin classes as soon as possible.

A reminder that Kill of the Week is still going on and needs more attention. All you have to do is take a screenshot or a demo of what you think is your best kill for the week and then submit it to [email protected]. Day of Defeat

By Superglue

Gun-Game Wednesdays

The Day of Defeat Source Division recently announced the arrival of a new, exciting and immensely popular event that is held every other Wednesday at 9:00pm EST, DOD:S Gun-Game. The event runs off a very smooth MOD and has already seen many fun and memorable moments even in its youthful existence.

DoD:s eGO Realism Campaign 5

The DOD:S eGO Realism event is as popular as ever. The campaign is in its 5th week and inevitably winding down. “Territory swaps are still happening and it’s going to be great.” DOD:S Advisor C-WHiT seemed to be very excited about the upcoming conclusion to this excellent campaign: “Allied CO's and Axis CO's are doing an amazing job.”

Preparations underway for eGO's Birthday Celebrations

C-WHiT also noted that like other divisions, DOD:S is getting ready for eGO’s birthday. For the time being, he decided to keep things discreet. “If we told you, it wouldn't be a surprise would it.” That leaves the possibility that something BIG is being planned, just that it's not yet ready to be unveiled to the eGO public.

Beat the Heat

Colmar has temporarily replaced Flash so that our members can achieve the new Beat the Heat achievement. This is obtained by winning one round on each of the winter maps, Colmar and Kalt. Fear not Flash fans; you'll be back in the Blue Cafe before you know it.

First Person Shooter eXperimental

By Superglue

First Person Shooter eXperimental division leader Jedihitman, when asked about the division for this past month, had this to say:

“The main thing for the FPS:X Division is how we've been expanding out into games. We have servers now for Brink and the World War II era Source modification called Resistance and Liberation, in addition to starting groups in All Points Bulletin: Reloaded. This is complementing our established line-up of servers for Insurgency and Killing Floor.

When interviewed, Jedihitman went on to say; "The division has brought in a huge number of recruits and many promotions should follow. We will also be hosting classes for Brink to help people understand how the game is played.”

Brink, as you know is state of the art gaming with the battle experience set in the near future.
Resistance and Liberation provides the player with a very realistic WW2 game. You can only hear people that are in close proximity to you. There are no cross hairs, so iron sights rule the day. While the graphics are slightly dated the game is available for free and is definitely worth the playing experience.
All Points Bulletin: Reloaded is cops and robbers on steroids with vehicles. Weapons etc can be purchased and upgraded as the player progresses in the game.

Strategy

By Muffinz

As a whole the Strategy division has had a decent month. Recruitment is maintaining a steady pace, and as of now there are 66 recruits. Let's keep the recruits coming in! All of leadership has worked very hard in June on the events for EdgeGamers 5th anniversary, which were wildly successful.

Minecraft is doing quite well; the server is regularly staying full. July began with a full reset. Event turn out is steady, however there is room for more members to participate. If you have any ideas about events remember to use the Drop Box, so that the idea can potentially turn into an event. There are a lot of drop box posts about Mine Cart Mania. It?s a fun concept, however it takes up a lot of resources, so until it is updated we may not see it on the server. If players find any mods that are similar to Mine Cart Mania feel free to drop box it.

The most successful event has been Break Away. Break Away is when we go to the arena and Matt With a Cat and a few other moderators can spawn sheets of glass. The objective is that everyone enters with a pickaxe and you try to break out the glass from under other players so that they fall. Shiznoe has most likely won the most amount of these events.

WoT started out very strong and right now we are working with Council to figure out how best to participate in Clan Wars. Clan Wars are events hosted by the developers, where a map of Europe is played by the clans. As of right now, there are a number of very strong clans out there, so competition is fierce. The most popular event in the past month was a tank company event, where we had a 76 to 99 tier rank quota and you get matched up against other tank companies.

The recent patch implemented the American line of Tank Destroyers, which feature mobile turrets that allow you to turn your turret back and forth, unlike the fixed turrets of the Russian and German line of TD?s. You can sit still and move your barrel so you can do more damage without having to move your tank. Many of our members are pursuing this line to later assist in competitive events like Clan Wars.

There are currently two clans for EdgeGamers and the combined total is about 120 members. Blasphemy reminds us to please look for the WoT STEAM group for more regular updates and events.

Team Fortress 2

By GingaNinja

The biggest news for TF2 has been the switch to a free to play model. This means the game is free to download and play, but certain perks can only be obtained through micro-transactions. However, because the game is free to play the TF2 servers have experienced a resurgence in player population. The wave of new players that the Free to Play update has brought includes many eGO members from other divisions, so if you haven’t tried TF2 before, now is the best time to do so.

With Team Fortress 2 switching to a free to play model the plans for EdgeGamers’ Team Fortress 2 division have become very simple. Global Domination and the incorporation of fun into every aspect of everything! Leadership would like to tell everyone to keep up the good work; Recruiting is up, the TF2 League Season 3 is underway, and the server rankings are rising.

The recent update includes new maps, weapons, and of course, hats. Now you have more reason to play TF2 for hours on end. As everyone knows, the more hats you have the more of a gentleman you become. eGO servers already have the new maps, so head on over to check them out.

With the ever growing need for new and fun events, the TF2 Event Coordinators are looking for fresh blood. If you are an interested eGO ranked member, send a PM on the forums to either Kevimaster or Whisker Biscuit, requesting an interview for a position on the team.

One notable thing about eGO’s birthday was the enormous TF2 promotion list. There are 30 new eG’s and 18 new eGO’s. Make sure to send your congratulations to every single one of them.

The TF2 division always has something unique, interesting, and most importantly, fun, stowed away for the future. So keep your eyes peeled on the divisional announcements and discussions page for future events and plans.

A recent thread in the General forum poses the question, "What is it that you can and/or will bring to the community as a whole? " Or as John F. Kennedy put it, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". I'm not going to ask why we should serve. I covered that in "The Reality of Intangibles". I do ask that you take a look around and see where you can make a difference, then roll up your sleeves and pitch in.

EdgeGamers thrives because of the hundreds of people who pitch in. From the =(e)= who asks his fellow players to "keep it friendly please" to the members who maintain the website, review demos for violations, and answer our technical questions. These people do it, for the most part, without recognition of their efforts or any sign of gratitude. One of the simplest things that you can do is to honor your fellow members' work with an expression of gratitude. Say "thanks" in vent. Throw a shout out on the ShoutBox. Send a pm. It will make a difference in their day, and it costs you nothing but a moment of time and a few strokes on the keyboard.

I'll start you off with something close to home:

To the reporters and editors of the Newsletter, thank you. Often you are asked to interrupt busy people and cajole them into spending some of their precious time with you so that you may get a story. The Newsletter is on the bottom of every priority list you can imagine. You strive to meet a deadline only to find that it cannot be published for two weeks after the events mentioned in your articles have come and gone. Editors struggle with correcting tense and grammar and making sure the quality of the message flows. The publisher, Kendle, must find a break from technical duties to send out over a thousand emails. For this you receive what? A byline. A jab because, while writing about a division that is not your own, you failed to address the nuance that was so obvious to the initiated. Silence. Well I know how hard you work. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
