New ARG: Could this be the prelude for the next HL?

Backstory (where the videos supposedly came from) - Someone in a video store was approached by a teenager with some old VHS tapes, and the teenager asked to have them converted to digital format. The video store employee, being a video store employee, promptly posted the videos to YouTube and said, 'Wow - look at these creepy videos some kid brought to me today.'

I'll go ahead and say it: this is one creepy video.

Someone watched it, decoded the numbers and got a link to a megaupload.com file for a HL:EP2 map. This is what was in the file:

Lots of info in that thread, with a lot of speculation.
The person who posted the first youtube video only has one post on Reddit...and it's that video.

Supposedly, there's one more video that is yet to be found (or it hasn't been released yet?). Is this leading up to a new, scarier HL:EP3? Is this just someone pulling an elaborate hoax?

Did I mention that video scarred me? Because it did. It was like that time my dog was sitting by my side, and then he just started starring at the corner; like, really starring. And put his tail between his legs. And looked at me and whimpered, then looked back at the corner. There was nothing in the corner.

The sound pattern on the second vid is a Shepard Tone (Adrian Shepard from Op4 anyone?)
Color correction and lighting make me think QR code on floor

I don't know...it's probably a hoax. But you never know.
 
looks completely made up to me. If valve were to do something like this again, they would have used a bit more effort. Plus it would have been noticed by other places, not just reddit.
 
think about it. whats the point of doing it if you DIDN'T want it to get out?
 
The Golden Potato steam group said they wanted to launch their own ARG, i think this is part of it.
 
What does ARG stand for? I'm new here, sorry for all the questions.
 
Its likely that its Valve if you read the reddit. Even if its not ARGs are fun.

Yes, it feels like Valve has something in the works. Gabe said in an interview that he wanted Half-Life to get back to scaring gamers. With the story semi-wide open for EP3, making it scarry is always a possibility.

Did you read that a lot of CS:S players have received invites from Valve? People are wondering if either: CS:S will be the next FTP game OR the next CS is imminent.
 
ARGs are "Alternate Reality Games." They're kind of confusing to define. But all that stuff with the picture decoding and things left around all those websites that eventually led to the early release page of Portal 2? That was the Portal 2 ARG.

Alternate Reality Games - They were really neat when they first came out; the sense of discovery as people first started decoding clues that would lead to websites, facebook profiles, or twitter accounts that had been set-up months in advance where more clues were found and eventually it would lead to....something.

I love Bees was for Halo 2. It lead some lucky players to a movie theater, where they could actually play Halo 2 on the big screen.


This ARG is being denounced by Valve, and all SPUF moderators are closing any threads on it or moving them to off-topic as they are supposedly not related to anything Valve is working on. Or is it? A YouTube account Valve used for the Potato ARG has been uploading videos within the last few days: http://www.youtube.com/user/DouglasKMarx - could be nothing, who knows? And of you visit the Potato ARG wiki page: http://valvearg.com/wiki/Valve_ARG_Wiki, it now links to another ARG site, probably nothing again.
 
If I had to guess I would say this is unrelated to ep3. I likely should get around to beating ep2 just in case they ever do decide to continue with the series.
