Ask most people in my generation what television show they usually watch, the answer is usually the same; I don't watch television. I can understand where they are coming from, for the most part TV is a vapid wasteland of mediocrity. Filled with half-cooked and poorly executed ideas with a disproportionate mixture of reality/talent shows. But all is not bad, here are 15 TV shows that prove that TV is at times worth watching.

Title: 24
Network: Fox
Status: Ended
Original Run 2001-2010

What is it?: The show chronicles the life and times of Jack Bauer, the biggest bad ass to ever live, as he saves the United States on 8 separate occasions. Each season occurs over the course of one day and the actions supposedly happen in real time.

Why watch it?: When 24 is at its best, you’ll find nothing more entertaining on television. Dealing out a high octane mixture of great action and deeply layered geo-political conspiracy, 24 offers up some of the tensest moments in TV history. Sure the show has its faults, some characters come off as obnoxious and not all seasons are created equal. But for its post 9/11 audience, it was exactly the show that everyone needed.

Title: Firefly
Network: Fox
Status: Cancelled
Original Run 2002

What is it?: The show follow the exploits of the crew of the Serenity, a spaceship, as they try to make ends meat in a galaxy run by an authoritarian cabal of planets?that?s a bad explanation. Anyway the crew is composed of a colorful cast of characters who for a couple of bucks will do any job, no matter how illegal it might be.
Why watch it?: Well for one, geek cred. Firefly during its run and after its cancellation has become a major cult hit, so much so that the DVD sales alone financed a movie for the series. The first, and only season, has its problems, but taken as a whole it?s an all around enjoyable way to spend your time. If you have Netflix, the whole series is available for streaming. If you?re too lazy to sit through the whole series, then you could always watch the film Serenity, same tone but with a bigger budget.

I've only watched four shows through(excluding anime), three of which from the same franchise...yeah, probably none of them are going to be on here.

Title: Luther
Network: BBC One
Status: Possibly Ongoing
Current Run 2010 ? Present

What is it?: You know the old saying ?the road to hell is paved with good intentions?? Well that pretty much nails the theme of Luther. The story follows DCI John Luther, played by the amazing Idris Elba, as he tries to do his job among internal affairs investigations, the meddling of a sociopath who?s become infatuated with him, and any number of morally questionable acts that he is forced to do.

Why watch it?: I could say Idris Elba and would have successfully argued this shows place on this list, but I think I?m better than that. Luther?s biggest fault are the cases that he has to solve, which come off as more monster of the week then I?d like to have seen?this issue is sort of fixed in the second season, but it?s still an issue. What does make the series great is everything that Luther has problems that go far beyond his usual cases. They leave a sense of foreboding like the whole world is about to collapse on out title character and that there simply nothing that can be done to save him. It?s a wells show series and well acted, but is just a little shy of being perfect.

Title: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Network: FX
Status: Ongoing
Current Run 2005 ? Present

What is it?: Imagine Seinfeld, but if all the characters were replaced the most horrible and self centered people imaginable. That comes almost close to what this show is like.

Why watch it?: To put it simply the show is freaking hilarious. The type of situations that the characters get themselves into are as stupid as that are brilliant. From smoking crack to get on welfare all the way to buying a whole bunch of gas hoping for the price to go up so that they could sell it at a profit. There really is no end to the insanity and stupidity of the characters and despite this you cannot help but love them. They are so horrible and incompetent that it is hard not to laugh when everything goes wrong for them.

Yeah, AMC will be making an appearance or two on this list.

Judging by your sig, I'm guessing those three would be the Stargate series...but what's the fourth?

Also getting ready for work will work on list later.

There are a ton of HBO and Showtime things that are really good. Im curious to see if they'll be on here too :O

HBO yes, but I finally got Showtime like two months ago so their shows wont be making an appearance. Sorry Dexter fans.

No Mythbusters or Daily Show/Colbert Report yet? They practically have to be on your list.

So far so good. I'm going to have to give Luther another shot here. Just could not get into it at all when I watched it. Same with Dr. Who.

Another good comedy to cheek out if you have not seen it is The IT Crowd (Wish more people know about this show) and Boardwalk Empire.

Also Beavis and Butthead is coming back! I might just have a reason to watch MTV again now.

After you post I'll try and add stuff (If there is any) to your list.

I heard Futurama was just ranked the highest rated cartoon (of all time?)

That makes sense, it's a great show.

I love all three of their shows, but this list is for shows that have story and characters.

Luther starts off alright, but hits a fever pitch at the end of the first season. I still haven't gotten around to watching Dr. Who, but I'm starting to get into Torchwood...which is just alright so far. I haven't seen the IT Crowd yet and I've only seen the first episode of Boardwalk.

Title: Fringe
Network: Fox
Status: Ongoing
Current Run 2008 – Present

What is it?: The closest proxy for this show is either the X-Files or Torchwood, but that would only apply to the first season. The show is essentially about a small group of people exploring weird and paranormal incidents that happen on the east coast of the United States. But in the second season the show expands into an over-arching serialized drama with a world shattering event on the horizon that needs to be stopped and the possibility of all out interdimensional war.

Why watch it?: The first season is nothing to write home about, it's there mostly to set the stage and characters for what's to come. But with the second season comes an interesting plot and some really creative ideas. Seriously this is easily the best Sci-fi show on today and is worth your attention, especially since it miraculous renewal for its fourth season.
