cl_legacy_crosshair_scale 1 and then you can use cl_crosshairscale # again.

I personally myself use cl_crosshairscale 0.

I don't use crosshairscale, I use: cl_crosshairsize 2. Big enough that I can see the recoil, and yet small enough to aim precisely.

Works well at any range.
